John Braxton Perkins

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of John Perkins on August 29, 2026, at his home. Born on November 10, 1943, in the serene town of Buckingham, Virginia, John was the beloved son of the late Horace and Mary Sue Perkins. His journey through life was marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community. John's early years were spent in Buckingham County, where he attended school and formed the foundation of a life characterized by hard work and dedication. After obtaining his CDL license, he embarked on a successful 20-year career with Gordon and Thomas in East Orange, New Jersey. Following this chapter, he returned to his roots in Virginia, dedicating 30 years to Salmon Specialized Hauling Inc. until his retirement in June 2025. In 2003, John married his beloved Linda Elizabeth Perkins, with whom he shared over five decades of love, laughter, and companionship. Together, they built a nurturing home and raised three grandchildren, embodying the essence of family. John's devotion to his daughter, Nina Marie Nieves, was profound, and he cherished her with all his heart and soul. He was also a guiding presence to his stepchildren, Richard, Linda, Morbia, and Jamillah Branch, and a source of joy to his grandchildren, Ashley Hersh (Mark) and Avery Nieves, among others, and great-grandchildren Benjamin and Anjalee Hersh, and Tokyo and Hazel Newsome. John was predeceased by his parents, his sister Nellie M. Walker (Rev. James I), and his brothers Leslie (Cleo) Perkins, Rev. James S. Perkins, and Robert D. Perkins. His surviving siblings, Garcie Thomas (Elmer), Mary Sue Moore, George Perkins (Loretta), Bascom Perkins (Helen), Yvonne Spencer, and Lucinda Salisbury (Grayling), treasure their memories with him. A man of enduring kindness, John was known for his beautiful smile and welcoming nature. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, bringing joy and laughter into the lives of those around him. An avid 49ers fan, he never missed a game and savored fried chicken wings, potatoes and onions, and a bottle of water, with a special tradition of enjoying chitterlings, potato salad, and green beans every New Year. John found solace in simple pleasures, whether fishing, bowling, or enjoying the tranquility of his garage. He cherished these moments of peace, often sharing them with neighbors who were drawn to his warmth. A service to honor John's life will be held on September 12, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Fork Union Baptist Church, located at 5933 Dixie Hill Rd, Buckingham, VA. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Intermíhealth Care for their compassionate support during this difficult time. John Perkins will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to be touched by his life.
