It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of John Benjamin McDaniel Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, who left this world peacefully on February 25, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on March 24, 1928, in the quaint town of Herndon, Virginia, John was the cherished son of John and Margaret McDaniel.
John's life was a testament to dedication and service—to his family, his country, and his community. After graduating high school, he answered the nation’s call and embarked on a 20-year career with the United States Navy. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and his service left an indelible mark on those he served alongside. Upon retiring from active duty, John continued his dedication to naval excellence by working at the Washington Navy Yard until he fully retired, bringing his characteristic integrity and diligence to every task.
In 1969, John married the love of his life, Jeanette, and together they built a beautiful life in Accokeek, Maryland. Their marriage, which spanned over five decades, was a beacon of love and partnership. They raised two wonderful sons, John and Robert, instilling in them the values of honor, kindness, and perseverance.
Though preceded in death by his beloved sister Leah and his dear son Robert, John's legacy continues to thrive through his surviving family. His devoted wife Jeanette and their son John cherish his memory and are committed to carrying forward the lessons he imparted. John was also the proud grandfather to two grandchildren, who were the light of his life and brought him immense joy and pride.
John's life will be celebrated on March 20, 2026, with a service at 10:00 a.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home, located at 5635 Washington Ave, La Plata, MD 20646. Family, friends, and all whose lives he touched are invited to gather in remembrance and gratitude for the gift of his presence among us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John’s name to a veteran’s charity of choice, honoring his lifelong commitment to those who served.
