It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of John B. Schmidt, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. John departed this world on May 28, 2026, at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family and community.
Born on August 19, 1945, in Staten Island, NY, John was the cherished son of James and Clara Schmidt. From a young age, he exhibited a generous and caring nature, traits that would define his life and endear him to all who knew him. Though his parents and brothers, Roy and Dennis Schmidt, have predeceased him, their spirits undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms.
In 1966, John married the love of his life, Gail, and together they embarked on a beautiful journey that spanned six decades. Their deep bond was a testament to enduring love and partnership, rooted in mutual respect and shared dreams. Together, they raised one son, John J. Schmidt, who brought immense joy and pride into their lives. John's legacy continues through his son, daughter-in-law Petra, and his cherished grandson, Mason, who will forever carry forward the values and warmth he imparted.
John was a man of many talents and interests, known affectionately as "Mr. Fix It" for his remarkable ability to repair anything with patience and skill. His love for life was evident in his passion for bowling, line dancing, skiing, and fishing—activities he pursued with enthusiasm and joy. Whether casting a line in tranquil waters or gracefully gliding down snowy slopes, John embraced each moment with gratitude and a zest for life.
Above all, John was a man who gave generously of himself, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a kind word. He was reliable and hardworking, traits that earned him the respect and admiration of all who crossed his path. His gentle spirit and kind heart left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered, and his legacy of compassion will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
John's life will be celebrated in a private ceremony, honoring his wishes for an intimate gathering of those closest to him. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we take comfort in the memories shared and the love that remains.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in John's memory, celebrating the life of a man who gave so much to others.
John B. Schmidt will be dearly missed but never forgotten. His spirit will live on in the hearts of his beloved wife Gail, son John, daughter-in-law Petra, grandson Mason, and countless friends and family members who were touched by his kindness and generosity. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing he was deeply loved.
