It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of John B Risley, who departed this life on January 30, 2026, at the age of 81. John left us quietly at home, surrounded by love and the cherished memories of a life fully lived, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. His journey began on May 13, 1944, in the small, close-knit community of East Dubuque, Illinois, where he was born to a world that he would touch in profound and lasting ways. John's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to family, friends, and community. He was a devoted husband to Sheri, with whom he shared 23 beautiful years of marriage. Their love story began in the heart of Dubuque, Iowa, where they pledged their vows on April 4, a date they celebrated each year with joy and gratitude. John's capacity for love and compassion extended beyond his immediate family. He was a cherished father to his children, Lisa (Wayne) Lynch and Rick (Tracey) Parker, who carry forward his legacy of kindness and generosity. As a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren—Jamie, Missy (Keaton), RJ, Levi, Devon, Dylan (Eadie), and Whitney (Woody)—and great-grandfather to four—Mitchel, Aliyah, Jace, and Roman—John delighted in the vibrant energy and laughter that filled family gatherings, always finding ways to connect with each generation. Throughout his career, John dedicated himself to nurturing and supporting others. He found fulfillment working at Nativity School, where he touched the lives of countless students, and at Lavon's Golf Course, where he combined his love of the outdoors with his gift for bringing people together. John's work was not just a job; it was an extension of his generous spirit and his desire to see others thrive. In his personal life, John found joy in the simple pleasures that made up his days. He was a familiar and beloved figure at the local Walmart, where he would often visit to chat with the workers, spreading warmth and laughter wherever he went. John had a unique way of making everyone feel seen and valued, and his visits were a highlight for many who came to know him as a friend. His passion for life was evident in the way he embraced his hobbies. Whether riding his tractor or scooting around town, John was always on the move, eager to connect with people and share a smile. His presence was a constant reminder of the beauty found in everyday interactions and the importance of community. As we remember John, we celebrate a life that was rich in love, laughter, and friendship. His gentle spirit and kind heart leave an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know him. John taught us to cherish every moment, to love unconditionally, and to find joy in the connections we make along the way. John B Risley's legacy will continue to shine brightly in the lives of his beloved family and friends. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the stories we share and the memories we hold dear. A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date, where all who were touched by his kindness are welcome to join in honoring the man who gave so much to so many. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to a cancer research foundation of your choice, in memory of John and his brave fight. May John's soul rest in eternal peace, knowing he was deeply loved and will be forever missed.
