It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Appel, who departed this life on July 11, 2026, just shy of his 64th birthday. John passed peacefully at his home in West Wyoming,, Pennsylvania, surrounded by his beloved family, after bravely facing complications from a spinal cord injury.
John was born to Donald and Constance Appel on July 21, 1962, in Wilkes Barre, PA. He was predeceased by his father, Donald, but leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue to inspire those who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Pat Thornton Appel, with whom he shared an enduring marriage since August 8, 1981. Together, they faced life's challenges with unwavering strength and raised two wonderful children, Cassandra and John Jr.
Cassandra and her husband Robert Frederickson, along with John Jr and his wife Lisa, were blessed with the guidance and care of a father who was as loving as he was wise. John was the proud grandfather to three grandchildren, Eli, Ethan, and Zoe, who brought immense joy and laughter into his life.
John was a cherished brother to Donna Micencik and her husband Mark, in addition to Patricia Dempsey, and Thomas Appel., All who knew him cherished his quick wit and warm smile. His ability to lend a helpful hand was a testament to his generous spirit and kind heart.
A graduate of Pittston Area High School, John furthered his education at Scranton University. His career included positions at Specialty Records and ACME Markets, where he was respected for his dedication and work ethic. John was also deeply committed to his community, serving on the West Wyoming council and dedicating his time to coaching Little League baseball, where he left a lasting impact on many young lives.
John's passion for working with his hands was evident in the many creations he lovingly crafted for friends and family. His hobbies reflected his creativity and the joy he found in making others smile.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the nurses of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, the nurses at Commonwealth Hospital, Dr. F Collini, Dr. L Mangino, and Dr. L Schiandra for their compassionate care and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in John's memory to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, an organization close to his heart.
As we remember John, let us celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to those he held dear. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the strength of family and the power of a generous spirit.
