It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Joey Lester Thompson on May 22, 2026, at the age of 69. Joey was born on February 8, 1957, in Boaz, Alabama, to Rita and Ron Thompson, who predeceased him along with his cherished grandparents, Barry and Wanda Thompson. Joey’s journey was marked by dedication, love, and service. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Sheila, with whom he shared a remarkable journey that began on June 15, 1975, when they wed at a college bar in Auburn. Their marriage was a testament to love and partnership, characterized by shared adventures and unwavering support. Together, they were blessed with a vibrant family, including seven grandchildren: Jaxon Snead, “Billy Goat” Luke Lasseter, Jacob Perry, Baylor Langdale, Todd Dover, Nate Dover, and Temu “Todd’s Fire Buddy.” Joey also leaves behind one great-grandchild, who will grow up hearing stories of their great-grandfather’s legacy. A man of many talents and interests, Joey pursued his education with diligence, earning a high school diploma, an associate degree in Emergency Medicine, and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. His professional life was equally commendable, defined by his long-standing service as a volunteer firefighter. Joey dedicated over 25 years to the Soganeese Fire Department, where he served with distinction as Captain and later as Chief. His leadership and bravery left an indelible mark on the community he loved so dearly. Joey’s commitment to his faith was central to his life. As the president of the Southern Baptist Association of Alabama from 2006 to 2009, and a devoted member of Cedar Ridge Baptist Church, he exemplified the principles of kindness, generosity, and service. His warm heart and willingness to lend a helping hand were well-known, with many describing him as the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back. Away from his professional and community endeavors, Joey found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid golfer and bass fisherman, passions he shared with friends and family. At home, he cherished quiet moments watching Netflix alongside Sheila, creating a lifetime of shared memories. A funeral service to celebrate Joey’s life will be held on May 22, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at DuPont’s Place. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association, an organization close to Joey’s heart. The family would also like to express their deepest gratitude to Chi Chi Annabelle Eubanks for her unwavering support and kindness during this time. Joey Lester Thompson was a beacon of love, courage, and integrity. While he will be profoundly missed, the impact of his life will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
