Joella Fuentes

Joella Fuentes, a remarkable and beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, at the age of 87 due to cardiac arrest. Born on November 6, 1938, in Dothan, Alabama, Joella was a beacon of light and love, whose laughter and kindness touched everyone she encountered. Joella was the cherished daughter of the late Clara Mae Cooper and Leroy Cooper. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Frank Fuentes, her parents, and her siblings, Connie Harrison, Charles Cooper, and Jim Cooper. Her legacy continues through her devoted children, Franklin Fuentes and Rise’ Shuler, her cherished grandchildren, and her adoring great-grandchildren. Joella also leaves behind her dear sister, Susan Cooper, beloved niece Kelsey Shuler, nephew Aponte Hurt, grandson Nova Hurt, and nephew Michael Cooper. Throughout her life, Joella dedicated herself to the care and well-being of others. She began her distinguished career as a nurse at New York Hospital, where she had the unique opportunity to care for Marilyn Monroe. As, well as for Greta Garbo. Her compassionate nature led her to serve as a caregiver at Hale House and work at King’s County Hospital. Her commitment to public health and safety extended to her work with the NY City HPD division. Joella's dedication to supporting women and children was evident in her creation of "The Mayor's Task Force Against Rape, Battered Women, and Child Abuse" under the guidance of Mayor Edward Koch in the 1970s. This groundbreaking program remains integral in major hospitals today, a testament to her enduring impact on society. Outside of her professional life, Joella was a woman of many passions. She found joy in reading, gardening, fashion, and music. Her laughter was infectious, and her wisdom was a gift she shared freely with those around her. Known for her loyalty, sensitivity, humor, and boundless kindness, Joella enriched the lives of all who knew her. A private funeral ceremony will be held in her honor, attended by close family and friends. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Brooklyn, Presbyterian Methodist, and Flushing hospitals. As, well as Hakim Tabuu Muhammad for their exceptional care of Joella in her final days. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Joella's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization she admired for its dedication to helping children. Joella Fuentes will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her legacy of love and compassion will live on in the hearts of her family and the countless lives she touched. May she rest in peace.
