With heavy hearts yet gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Joel R. Barnes on February 23, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on April 16, 1935, in Platteville, Wisconsin, Joel was the beloved son of Samuel and Marion Cordingly Barnes. His life was a tapestry of dedication, love, and service, leaving a legacy that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Joel spent his formative years in Platteville, where he developed a passion for engineering and a love for the outdoors. He pursued his academic aspirations at the Wisconsin Institute of Technology, earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. This educational foundation enabled him to build a distinguished career as an engineer in the steel industry, where he dedicated over 30 years to shaping the infrastructure that supports our daily lives. A man of integrity and commitment, Joel was not only devoted to his profession but also to his family and community. He shared 71 wonderful years of marriage with his loving wife, Rose Marie Flanagan Barnes. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Joel was a proud father to his surviving children, Wendy Barnes and James "Jim" Barnes, who will carry forward his values of kindness and perseverance. Joel's legacy is also reflected in his contributions to the Boy Scouts of America, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and later became a decorated troop leader. His dedication to mentoring young scouts earned him numerous awards and the lasting respect of many. His commitment to shaping future generations was a testament to his character and generosity. A man of many talents, Joel was an avid woodworker, finding joy and satisfaction in creating with his hands. His magnificent woodshop was not just a space for crafting but a haven where he found peace and purpose. He took great pleasure in building decks and patios, leaving behind beautiful, tangible reminders of his skill and passion. Joel is predeceased by his son, Thomas Barnes, whose memory he held dearly. He leaves behind a family who adored him and friends who will remember him fondly. A service to honor Joel's life will be held on March 7, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, located at 7600 Trenholm Road Extension, Columbia, SC. Friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate the remarkable life of a man who touched so many hearts. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America, ensuring that Joel's spirit of mentorship and community service continues to inspire future generations. Joel R. Barnes will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, his gentle spirit, and his boundless love for those around him. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.
