Joel spent his formative years in Arkansas, attending Woodlawn High School before earning his degree from Arkansas State University. His keen eye for beauty and design led him to a fulfilling career in floral design and event planning. Beyond his professional achievements, Joel was a devoted family man. For 36 wonderful years, he shared his life with his beloved partner, Buddy Mullino, in Dallas. Their home was a sanctuary filled with love, laughter, and a shared appreciation for antiques, which Joel enjoyed collecting and selling. His clever wit and humor were the threads that wove his family and friends together, leaving them with cherished memories and countless stories to share.
Joel was a devoted father to his son, Justin Winchester, and a loving father-in-law to Maggie Schain and her husband. His role as a grandfather was a source of immense pride and joy, and his legacy will continue through his grandchild, who carries forward the light of his love.
He is also survived by his dear mother, Doris Gulley; his sisters, Debbie Smith and Cyndy Apricena; his brother, Tony Henderson, and his brother-in-law; and his nieces, Jennifer Crowell, Jessica Roupe, Stephanie Apricena, and Alexandra Apricena. Each of these relationships was a testament to Joel's nurturing and generous spirit, which left an indelible mark on those he loved.
