In Loving Memory of Joe Riley
On July 15, 2026, Joe Riley, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully passed away, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Born on September 2, 1949, in Boston, Massachusetts, Joe lived a life full of love, dedication, and service to others.
The son of Virginia Baker and Walter Riley, Joe was raised with values that guided him throughout his life. He graduated from Bryan Station High School in 1967, and it was in Lexington that he laid the foundation for his remarkable career and family.
Joe dedicated his professional life to serving the community as a member of the Lexington Fire Department. Rising through the ranks to retire as an Assistant Fire Chief, he was not only a respected leader but also a cherished friend to many. His passion for his work even led him to a brief moment of fame with a cameo on the hit TV show "Rescue 911." Joe's legacy in the fire department continues through his son, Chris, who followed in his father's brave footsteps.
After retiring, Joe continued his commitment to service as a facilities manager at Centenary Methodist Church, where he delighted in working within a Christ-centered environment. His final role at Tates Creek Golf Course allowed him to blend his work with his love for golf, and he cherished the opportunity to engage with patrons and enjoy the game he loved.
Joe was a man of faith, deeply involved in his church community and a dedicated viewer of Southland Church's TV services. He found joy in leading a Bible study for the men at his independent living facility, sharing his love of scripture and fellowship.
A sports enthusiast, Joe was a devoted fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Kentucky Wildcats. Some of his happiest times were spent cheering on his teams with friends and family, even when victories were elusive. He was also an avid reader, with a particular interest in American history and true crime, often revisiting tales from the library near his favorite fire station.
Joe's warmth and humor were infectious. Known for his kindness and "dad jokes," he made friends wherever he went and was a constant source of support and encouragement for his family. His children, Patrick (spouse Yasuko), Rob, Steven (spouse Charissa), Tim (spouse Brigitte), Chris (spouse Chasity), and Katelyn (spouse Ignacio), along with his cherished grandchildren Maya, Kai, Lincoln, Jackson, Reagan, RJ, Dolly, and Rafael, were the pride and joy of his life.
Joe is survived by his siblings Mary Ellen, Patsy, and Mike, who, along with his children and grandchildren, will continue to celebrate his life and legacy. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to Joe's care during his illnesses, and for the love and support shown by friends and family.
A service in honor of Joe Riley's life will be held on August 15, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Kerr Brothers, 463 E. Main St, Lexington, KY 40507. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a charity of your choice in memory of Joe's generous spirit and commitment to service.
