February 25, 1960 — July 7, 2026

With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Joanne Shannon, a devoted mother, beloved grandmother, and cherished friend. Joanne was tragically taken from us on July 7, 2026, at the age of 66, in a car accident. Born on February 25, 1960, in Houston, Texas, Joanne was the beloved daughter of the late Priscilla and Herbert Piper. Joanne's life was a testament to strength, resilience, and unwavering love for her family. Predeceased by her parents and her beloved son, Demetri Dennis, Joanne leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth. She is survived by her adoring children, Michelle and Danny Kirksey, Destiny Dennis, Charnele Thomas, Shayla Dennis, Kayla and O'Neil Maxie, and Chrisonni and Stacey Shanks. Joanne was also the proud grandmother of four grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life. A proud alumna of North Western High School, Joanne sought to further her education and, in 2023, achieved her lifelong dream of earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Spelman University. Her passion for justice and equality was evident in all she did, and she was an inspiration to all who knew her. Joanne's joy was found in the simple pleasures of life. A seafood enthusiast, she delighted in gathering her family for meals at her favorite seafood restaurants every weekend. Sundays were sacred for Joanne, not only for the meals but for her devotion to attending church services. Her faith was a guiding light, and she was known to scour Facebook to find a service to attend, ensuring that Sundays were reserved for worship and reflection. Those who knew Joanne remember her as the glue that held her family together. Her home was a sanctuary for anyone in need, and she welcomed all with open arms. Joanne's straightforwardness was legendary; her honesty was a gift, often reminding loved ones that "you will hate me now, but you will thank me later." Her wisdom and unwavering support will be deeply missed. The family will hold a private ceremony to honor Joanne's life and memory. They express their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Special thanks are extended to Graceful Memorial Chapel for their compassionate care and service. Though Joanne has left this world, her spirit and love live on in the hearts of those she touched. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice in Joanne's honor. As we say goodbye to Joanne, we take comfort in knowing that her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire and guide us. She will be dearly missed but forever remembered.
