Joanne Reed, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, peacefully departed this life on June 17, 2026, at the age of 69. Born on February 25, 1957, in the rolling hills of West Virginia, Joanne was the cherished daughter of the late William Greene and Betty J. Portis-James, whose values and love she carried throughout her life.
Joanne's journey was one of resilience and compassion. After graduating from Ballou High School, she embarked on a career in the dental field, where her attention to detail and gentle demeanor made her a trusted and appreciated professional. Guided by her entrepreneurial spirit, Joanne, alongside her best friend Jackie, affectionately known as Mateena, co-founded Unique Office Support on Minnesota Ave. in Washington, DC. Her dedication and tireless work ethic turned this venture into a thriving business that served the community with distinction.
Later, seeking new challenges, Joanne joined the Fraternal Order of Police in Washington, D.C. Here, she found another family among her colleagues, earning their respect and admiration through her unwavering commitment and integrity.
Joanne was a woman of many gifts. Known for her quick wit and warm smile, she had an innate ability to bring joy and laughter into any room. Her kindness and generosity were boundless, touching the lives of everyone she met. Joanne's heart was as vast as her capacity to love, and she was always ready with a joke to lighten any mood, making everyone feel welcome and valued.
Family was the cornerstone of Joanne's life. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Shelly D. Reed, her loving sister, Juanita Reed, her brother, Richard J. Portis, and her cherished granddaughters, Brenee Reed, Omari Reed, and Tiania Franks. She also leaves behind a legacy of love with her five great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and an extended family that adored her. Joanne was predeceased by her parents, her beloved daughter Aleya S. Reed, and her brothers, Jerry N. Reed and James E. Portis III.
A celebration of Joanne's life will be held on July 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Dunns & Son’s Funeral Home, located at 9420 Marlboro Pike, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772. Joanne's family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the prayers, calls, visits, and acts of kindness shown during this difficult time.
