Joan Marie Bundy

October 9, 1943 — May 7, 2026

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the peaceful passing of Joan Marie Bundy on May 7, 2026. Born in the vibrant city of Washington, D.C., on October 9, 1943, Joan was a beacon of warmth and kindness in the lives of all who knew her. She was the cherished daughter of the late John and Louise Kirby, whose legacy of love and community she carried forward throughout her life. Joan's life was a testament to the power of family and faith. She was a devoted mother to her beloved daughter, Lisa L. Kirby, of Waldorf, Maryland, and a nurturing presence to her granddaughters, Marquita Kirby and Logan Henderson, also of Waldorf, Maryland. Joan's heart expanded with joy as she welcomed her great-grandchildren, James and Joshua Bridgett and Da'Mya Henderson, each of whom brought her immense pride and happiness. Joan's family was the cornerstone of her life, and she cherished each moment spent in their company. Educated within the D.C. Public Schools system, Joan continued to nurture her love of learning through adult education classes, always eager to expand her horizons and enrich her understanding of the world. Her dedication to personal growth was matched by her commitment to her community, as evidenced by her active membership in Bibleway Church, where she found spiritual sustenance and camaraderie for over 50 years. Joan's life was filled with an array of passions and pursuits. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was partaking in church activities, engaging in the vibrant atmosphere of the DC Wellness Senior Center, or embarking on shopping and casino trips that infused her days with excitement and laughter. Her outings with family and friends were legendary, as was her role as the quintessential babysitter, known and adored by every child across generations in her family. Joan is survived by her loving daughter, Lisa, her devoted sister, Peggotty Hyatte of Raleigh, North Carolina, her granddaughters Marquita and Logan, and her treasured great-grandchildren, James, Joshua, and Da'Mya. She is also survived by her long-time companion, Norman Jones, whose unwavering support and companionship were a source of great comfort and joy in her life. Predeceased by her parents, sisters Temple Wilson, Edna Haynes, Betty Patterson, Barbara Bell, Jacqueline Hill, Bernette Kirby, and brothers Joseph Kirby and Robert Kirby, Joan is now reunited with them in eternal peace. Joan's legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering faith. She leaves behind a family enriched by her wisdom and warmth, and a community that will long remember her for her generous spirit and her ability to bring people together. Her life was a blessing, and her memory will be a guiding light in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. A celebration of Joan's life will be held at Christ Way Cathedral, where her spirit will be honored and her life celebrated by family and friends. As we gather to remember her, we find solace in the love she shared and the joy she brought into our lives. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the DC Wellness Senior Center in Joan's memory, continuing her legacy of community care and support.
