It is with heavy hearts and profound admiration that we announce the passing of Joan M. Tunstall, a beloved matriarch, steadfast friend, and beacon of strength, who departed this world on May 14, 2026, at the age of 97. Joan passed away peacefully, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family. Born on September 12, 1928, in Jefferson County, Kentucky, Joan was the cherished daughter of the late Otto and Minnie Lentz. She was raised in a lively household, sharing her formative years with her siblings William (Bill), Mary Agnes (Ag), Joseph (Joe), Robert (Bob), Mary Catherine, and James (Jim), all of whom have predeceased her. Joan was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Mary Ann Bense, whose spirit continued to be a source of inspiration and strength for Joan throughout her life. Joan's journey was one marked by resilience and a deep-seated love for her family. She spent her career as a dedicated bookkeeper for several small logistics companies, where she was known for her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering work ethic. She retired in her 70s, having left an indelible mark on her colleagues and the industry she so loyally served. Beyond her professional achievements, Joan was a cornerstone of her community, volunteering for over 20 years at the Santa Clara Community Center. Her selflessness and commitment to helping others were a testament to her generous spirit and compassionate nature. Joan found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life, most notably the cherished annual family trips to Richardson Grove State Park. These camping excursions became treasured rituals, filled with laughter, storytelling, and the forging of lasting memories. Joan also delighted in babysitting her grandchildren and, eventually, her great-grandchildren, each visit a testament to the boundless love she had for her family. Joan's legacy is carried forward by her devoted sons, David Hernandez (Marilyn) and Dana Hernandez (Kathy), who will continue to honor her memory with the same love and dedication she bestowed upon them. She was the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren and the delighted great-grandmother of eleven great-grandchildren, each of whom carries a piece of her heart and spirit. Throughout her life, Joan was celebrated for her strength, resilience, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her presence was a source of comfort and guidance, her love a binding force that will continue to unite her family in her absence. A service to honor and celebrate Joan's extraordinary life will be held on May 22, 2026, at 10:00 am at Los Gatos Memorial Park, located at 2255 Los Gatos Almaden Road, San Jose, CA 95124.
