August 29, 1942 — June 23, 2026
With deep sorrow and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Joan Hutchinson McDonald, who departed this world peacefully on June 23, 2026. Joan drew her last breath surrounded by love and care at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Florida, concluding a remarkable journey that began on August 29, 1942, in the quaint town of DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
Born to William "Hoot" Hutchinson and Eva Brannon Hutchinson, Joan was the embodiment of kindness, generosity, and dedication. Her gentle smile and welcoming spirit left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Joan was predeceased by her beloved son, Thomas Michael, her cherished parents, and her four sisters, Edith Sullivan, Elvie Lynn, Muriel Pyles/Spears, and Hilda DeRycke. Her departure is a profound loss to her surviving family, including her devoted husband of 63 years, Terrence E. McDonald; her adoring grandchildren, Jennifer McDonald, Bryan McDonald (and his wife, Joanna Pringle McDonald), and Michael Hester; her brother-in-law, Michael McDonald; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close family friend, Glenda Parks Treadway.
Joan's life was a testament to the power of education and compassion. A proud alumna of Walton High School, she pursued higher learning at Florida State University before earning an AA in Nursing from Manatee Community College. Driven by a passion for teaching and a commitment to excellence, Joan obtained a BA in Education, an ME, and later an MSN from the University of South Florida. Her professional journey began as a Registered Nurse at Manatee Memorial Hospital, where she quickly ascended to the position of head nurse in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Joan's career later blossomed in education, where she led the nursing program at the Manatee Vocational School, Manatee Community College, and Sarasota Vocational School. Her legacy includes a pioneering approach to competency-based education, which became a model emulated by numerous institutions.
Joan's vibrant life extended beyond her professional achievements. She was an ardent traveler and RVer, exploring all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and much of Western Europe, with a special affection for Ireland, the land of her ancestors. Her adventurous spirit was matched by her commitment to community and service. Joan held memberships in numerous organizations, including the AARP, NRTA, Florida Retired Educators Association, Phi Delta Kappa Educational Association, and alumni associations for FSU and USF. She was an active PTA member and served as President of the Ellenton Civic Association. Her contributions to these groups reflected her unwavering dedication to making the world a better place.
Joan's family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Manatee Memorial Hospital and Westminster Bradenton for their exceptional care during her final days. Her caretakers found joy and delight in attending to her, a testament to the warmth and kindness she exuded throughout her life.
