It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Hurd, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, who departed this life peacefully on June 25, 2026, after a courageous battle with dementia. Joan was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on November 8, 1955, to the late Arthur and Ann Opmeer. She was a beacon of love, generosity, and compassion, touching the lives of many with her unwavering dedication to helping others. Joan's journey of education began at Fruta High School, where she laid the foundation for a life dedicated to learning and service. She pursued her passion for understanding the human mind by earning a master's degree in psychology, a testament to her commitment to making a difference in the lives of those around her. Her career was marked by her work with nonprofit organizations devoted to supporting families, where she was known for her empathy, kindness, and tireless dedication. A woman of deep faith, Joan served as a chaplain, providing comfort and solace to those in need. Her generous spirit knew no bounds, as she was always eager to volunteer her time and care for others. Her love for music was evident in her beautiful renditions of hymns, which she sang with a voice that could uplift even the heaviest of hearts. Additionally, Joan found joy in raising dogs, whose companionship she cherished dearly. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Ann Opmeer, but her legacy continues through her loving family. She is survived by her devoted children, Julia Hayes, Adam Hurd, Zachary Hurd, and Aaron Hurd, as well as her cherished grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her life. Her former husband, Alan Hurd, and her siblings, Arthur Opmeer and Debbie Reed, also survive her and will forever hold her memory close. In honoring Joan's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held. The family extends their deepest gratitude to her caregivers, whose compassion and dedication provided comfort to Joan in her final days. While Joan's physical presence will be deeply missed, her spirit will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those she touched. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that those wishing to honor Joan's memory consider making a donation to a charity close to her heart, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping others. May Joan Hurd's soul find eternal peace, and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
