In loving memory, we celebrate the remarkable life of Joan Cherek, who passed away peacefully at her home on April 15, 2026, surrounded by her cherished family. Born on August 11, 1931, in Omaha, Nebraska, Joan was the beloved daughter of Dallas and Florence Baker. She was a radiant soul whose warmth and compassion touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.
Joan grew up in Omaha, where she was an adored sister to her predeceased siblings, Dallas, Paul, Doris, and Betty Baker. Her life was filled with love and adventure, marked by her marriage to the love of her life, Thomas Cherek, on May 27, 1950, in a beautiful ceremony at Holy Name Church. Together, they built a nurturing home filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories.
Joan and Thomas were blessed with a beautiful family, and though she endured the heartbreak of losing her husband Thomas, sons Thomas and Dale, and daughter Donna Jenkins, her strength and resilience remained unwavering. She is lovingly remembered by her surviving children: Ron (Barb) Cherek, Joanne (Bill) Blair, Randy (Cindy) Cherek, and Brian (Donette) Cherek, who carry forward her legacy of love and kindness. Joan's life was further enriched by her numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.
Her career at Bergan Mercy Hospital, where she dedicated herself to the surgical department, was marked by her exceptional work ethic and a genuine care for others. Joan retired with a legacy of compassion and professionalism that left an indelible mark on her colleagues and patients alike.
Known for her warm smile, playful stubbornness, and dynamic character, Joan had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth and laughter, where friends and family gathered to share in her boundless love and generosity. Her best friend and niece, Carol Thomas, and many loving extended family members and friends, will forever cherish the moments they shared with Joan.
As we bid farewell to a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, we take comfort in knowing Joan lived a full and meaningful life. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide those who knew her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Brookestone Meadows of Elkhorn for their exceptional love and care during Joan's final years, ensuring her comfort and dignity were always maintained.
Joan Cherek's life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the enduring bonds of family. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. A celebration of her life will be held to honor her memory, details of which will be shared with family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Joan's honor, continuing her lifelong commitment to helping others.
