It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jo Ann Drake, a beloved mother, sister, and friend, who left this world on June 9, 2026, at the age of 77. Jo Ann was born on November 28, 1948, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, to the late James and Marguerite White. Her life was a testament to love, dedication, and unwavering faith.
Jo Ann shared 49 wonderful years of marriage with her late husband, Gary Drake, whom she married in 1971. Their union was blessed with three devoted sons: Gary Jr., Rev. Eric, and Jarrett. Jo Ann's legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, who adored their grandmother and were a constant source of joy and pride in her life.
A proud graduate of Abraham Clark High School, Jo Ann went on to serve her community with distinction. She retired from The Borough of Roselle, where she held the position of Executive Assistant, known for her professionalism and commitment. Her work ethic and dedication were admired by colleagues and community members alike.
Faith was a cornerstone of Jo Ann's life. She was a founding member of St. Matthew Baptist Church, where she actively participated and served. Her dedication to her church family was evident in her many contributions, and she leaves behind a legacy of faith and service that will be remembered for generations.
Jo Ann was a beloved sister to four sisters: Rev. Jacqueline, Janet Hillis, June Ehkte, and Jerilyn Fulani, and her brother, Jeffrey White. Her extended family, including five nephews, four nieces, and a host of cousins, will forever cherish the memories they shared with her. Jo Ann's life was also enriched by the love and friendship of countless friends, all of whom will remember her warmth, kindness, and generosity.
Preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, and her beloved husband, Jo Ann is now reunited with them in eternal peace. Her departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.
As we say goodbye to Jo Ann, we celebrate a life well-lived. Her laughter, wisdom, and kindness touched all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace, knowing she was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
A memorial service will be held at St. Matthew Baptist Church, where friends and family will gather to honor Jo Ann's remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Matthew Baptist Church in Jo Ann's memory, ensuring her legacy of service and faith continues to touch lives.
