Jim Waters
June 16, 1948 — March 22, 2026
Jim Waters, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 22, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on June 16, 1948, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, Jim was the cherished son of Kendall and Virginia Waters and brother to the late Ken Waters. His life was a testament to love, faith, and dedication.
Jim shared 55 beautiful years of marriage with his wife, Christine Ann Waters, whom he married on August 14, 1970. Together, they built a life filled with love and warmth, raising two incredible children, Adam James and Jessica Elizabeth. Their family grew to include Jessica’s husband, Paul A. Patterson, and their sons, Cole and Jack, as well as Adam’s wife, Corrie Jennings Waters, and their children, Ezekiel, Ethne, Eydie, Eleora, and Emberly. Jim's legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, who adored their "Pops."
A graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in computer science, Jim was a pioneer in his field, starting his career as a computer programmer for the university. His journey led him to serve as a business manager in the university's department of chemistry and at Lincoln Christian College, before becoming the VP of Teller Services at Busey Bank in Champaign, Illinois. Jim's work was characterized by integrity and dedication, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends.
Jim was a devoted follower of Jesus and an active member of the Vineyard Church in Bloomington, Illinois, where his son Adam and daughter-in-law Corrie serve as pastors. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him with wisdom and compassion. Jim was a man of many talents and interests. He found joy in woodworking, the strategic challenge of golf, and the pages of history and Tom Clancy novels. He delighted in puzzles, games, and wordplay, living by the motto of never being bored over a board game. His wit and intelligence were matched by his patience and gentle spirit, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand.
Jim's love for the Fighting Illini was legendary, and it was fitting that he departed only after they secured a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. His steadfast support for his team was a reflection of his loyalty in all areas of his life.
Jim was a man who touched the lives of many, always with a smile and a pun to share. His legacy of kindness, humor, and unwavering love will be treasured by all who knew him. As we celebrate his life, we remember not just the man he was, but the joy and inspiration he brought to those around him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Vineyard Church Bloomington-Normal, a place that held a special place in Jim's heart. His light continues to shine through the lives he touched and the love he shared.
Jim Waters will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain a guiding light for his family and friends. His love, his laughter, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. May he rest in peace, embraced by the love of his family and the grace of his Savior.
