Jim Manthey, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in Bellingham, WA on October 30, 2026, after a courageous 16-month battle with ALS, surrounded by his family. Born on May 23, 1957, in Bellingham, WA, Jim lived a life filled with adventure, laughter, and love for those around him. He was preceded in death by Grandpa Matt (Ann) Yost, parents David Manthey and Marlene (Dave) Dunkin and his brother, Gordon Manthey. Despite these losses, Jim continued to be a pillar of strength for his family. In 1975, Jim graduated from Meridian High School, embarking on a career of over three decades with Intalco Aluminum Smelter in Ferndale. During his time he moved from shift work to supervisor of casting. His dedication and work ethic were unparalleled. After retiring, Jim took his talents to consult at other aluminum facilities including overseas, spending 21 months in Saudi Arabia starting a casting facility. He also worked at Turf Tenders and then worked turnarounds at BP with a contractor as a safety supervisor until his diagnosis. On June 9, 1978, Jim married Dawn and they shared 48 years together. They raised a family in Ferndale, WA. Jim is survived by his wife, Dawn, his children, Melissa (Tony) Welch, Travis (Signe) Manthey, and Trevin Manthey (Sara Barnes) all from Whatcom County. His legacy continues through his five grandchildren: Tamia Welch, Malia Welch, Hayden Manthey, Harley Manthey, and Lemoria Welch, who brought immense joy to his life. Jim was known for his striking blue eyes and infectious smile. He was the life of every gathering, always ready to entertain and bring joy to those around him. His love for fishing took him to the San Juan Islands and the BC coast on his fishing boat. Jim also found peace at his cabin in Winthrop and delighted in RVing across the United States. Jim and Dawn spent time seeing the world while he was in Saudi Arabia. Their adventures are fondly remembered, with no regrets for taking advantage of the moments they shared. Jim's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to friends and family who supported them during his illness.
