Jim Cunningham

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Cunningham, who departed this life peacefully on August 2, 2026, in the loving care of his family at his home in Durham, NC. Born on January 13, 1962, in New Brunswick, NJ, Jim was the cherished son of James Frances Cunningham and Rosalie Martha Koenig. He is now reunited with his beloved mother, Rosalie, in eternal peace. Jim’s journey was marked by a rich tapestry of love, service, and devotion. He was a devoted husband to Stacey Jude Venglarik, with whom he shared a life filled with laughter and warmth. Together, they raised four incredible children, Ben, Abby, Luke, and Kate, who were the pride and joy of his life. Jim’s legacy of kindness and strength will continue to inspire them in every step they take. An alumnus of North Carolina State University, Jim graduated in 1985, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design. His passion for science and innovation was evident in his career at GlaxoSmithKline, where he left an indelible mark through his dedication and creativity. Jim’s life was a testament to his commitment to service and community. From 1988 to 1990, he served as a motor vehicle instructor in the Peace Corps in Kenya, where he became fluent in Kiswahili and fostered a deep love for cultural exchange and understanding. Back home, he wore many hats as a Meals on Wheels driver, a North Carolina Science Olympiad Coach, a Cub Scout Den Leader, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, always extending his hand to those in need. A man of varied interests and talents, Jim loved the great outdoors and shared his enthusiasm for camping, hiking, and backpacking with his family and friends. His mechanical prowess was legendary, as he taught countless individuals how to keep their cars running with skill and patience. Jim’s imagination came alive in his storytelling, enchanting his children with tales from the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter. He found joy in the simple pleasures of walking his dogs and engaging with neighbors, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Jim's spirit was characterized by a unique blend of toughness and tenderness. He approached life with gusto and a boundless curiosity about the world around him. Whether cycling through the countryside, capturing moments with his camera, or delving into the intricacies of WWII history, Jim's passion for learning and preserving the wonders of life was infectious. Jim leaves behind his beloved wife Stacey, his children Ben, Abby, Luke, and Kate, his brothers Richard and Michael Cunningham, and his sister Beth Jones, along with a host of friends and extended family who will forever cherish his memory. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on August 15, 2026, at St. Matthew Catholic Parish, located at 1001 Mason Rd, Durham, NC, 27712. The family invites all who knew and loved Jim to join them in honoring his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ALS United North Carolina Inc, in Raleigh, NC, in memory of Jim Cunningham. His legacy of compassion and community service will continue to live on through the support of this worthy cause. Jim Cunningham lived a life full of love, laughter, and service, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
