Jessie Bell Scott, a beloved mother, grandmother, and community pillar, gracefully departed this world on August 26, 2026, at her home surrounded by loved ones. Born on July 18, 1936, in Sandy Run, South Carolina, Jessie was the cherished daughter of Eliza Peterson and Joseph Butler. Her life was a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering commitment to her family and community. Jessie's early years in Sandy Run were marked by a spirited curiosity and a passion for learning, which led her to graduate from John F. High School in 1954. She furthered her education by earning a certificate in agriculture, a fitting pursuit for someone with an innate love for gardening and the outdoors. In June of 1954, Jessie married the love of her life, Thomas Scott. Together, they embarked on a journey that would span six decades, moving to Maryland in 1957 where they nurtured a vibrant household filled with laughter and love. Their partnership was blessed with six wonderful children and the joy of 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Though Thomas, along with their sons Thomas Jr., Ronnie, and Bruce, and her sister Emma Lee Peterson, predeceased her, their memories lived on in Jessie's heart. Jessie's career was as diverse and impactful as her interests. She began her professional life at Reads Drug Store before she and Thomas opened Scotty's Variety Store in East Baltimore in 1972. Her entrepreneurial spirit thrived as she founded the community organization C.A.R.E., advocating for the needs of her neighborhood. Her dedication to community service continued through her work with Civil Works Real Food Farms from 2009 to 2019. A woman of deep faith, Jessie was an active member and board member of the Amazing Grace Church, where she celebrated life's joys and sought solace in times of sorrow. Her impeccable sense of style and infectious laugh made her a cherished presence at every gathering. She was known for her quick wit and an extraordinary memory that endeared her to all who knew her. Jessie's home was always filled with the aroma of her cooking and the warmth of her hospitality. Whether tending to her garden, engaging in spirited political discussions, or immersing herself in a good book, she found joy in life's simple pleasures, especially when shared with family. Jessie leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by her children Ralph and Vernita Taylor, Kenneth and Crystal Scott, Danielle Scott, and Angie Scott. Her grandchildren Shantana, Tanika, LaKeyia, Arnechia, Kenard, Daniel, Tashina, Mark, Brennon, Shana, Larry, Indeara, Davon, and her great-grandchildren will forever cherish the memories of their time with her. Jessie is also survived by her brothers John and Joe Peterson, along with a host of other family members and close friends. A celebration of Jessie's remarkable life will be held on September 11, 2026, at 9:30 AM at the Amazing Grace Church, 2424 McElderry Street, Baltimore, MD 21205. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Good Samaritan Hospital and the nurses at Gilchrist for their compassionate care during her final days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Jessie's honor, reflecting her lifelong commitment to giving back to the community she loved so dearly.
