Jerry Thomas Pope
December 14, 1941 — August 28, 2026
Jerry Thomas Pope, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 28, 2026, after a long courageous battle with congestive heart failure. Born on December 14, 1941, in the quaint town of Rhodhiss, Caldwell County, North Carolina, Jerry was the cherished son of Tate Henderson Pope and Sarah Johnson.
Jerry was a man of laughter and joy, known for his humor and light-hearted antics that could brighten the darkest of days. He was a disciplined and routine-focused individual, yet his curious nature made him a lifelong learner. Jerry had an immense love for everything Elvis Presley, and nothing delighted him more than sharing stories of the "good ole days" with friends and family.
He bravely served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a testament to his courage and dedication. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty Jean Berry Pope; his daughters, Debra Jean Pope and Jerry L. Pope; his son, Michael Pope; his parents, Tate Henderson Pope and Sarah Johnson; his brother, Tate Henry Pope, Jr. "T.H"; and his sister, Ruth Pope Russell.
Jerry leaves behind a loving family who will continue to cherish his memory. He is survived by his children, Jerry DeWanye Pope and his wife, LaSonyia, of Morganton, NC, and Priscilla Coldiron and her husband, Robert, of Newport News, VA. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Davin Manns, Lindsey Pope, Presley Pope, LaDarra Sherrill, Britny Leal, and Macey Lauren Coldiron; and his great-grandchildren: Taylen, Maxximus, Malibu, Kayden, Cameron, and Ezra. In his later years, Jerry found immense joy in the playful youth of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.
A service to celebrate Jerry's life will be held on September 1, 2026, beginning at 1:00 PM at Evans Funeral Services with Visitation, followed by funeral service at 2:00 PM, located at 1070 Taylorsville Rd., SE Lenoir, NC 28645.
