It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Jerry Doyle Spence on March 7, 2026, at the age of 72. Jerry left us peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and strength.
Born on December 16, 1953, in Mobile, Alabama, Jerry was the cherished son of Timothy J. Spence and Lillee B. Howell Spence. He grew up in a lively household alongside his siblings, the late Linda Schieder, Timothy Spence, and Marion Spence, as well as his surviving sisters Joyce Mainus, Melba Sharpe, and Cheryl Brinkman. Jerry’s upbringing in Mobile shaped him into a remarkable man whose warmth touched everyone he met.
Jerry was a proud alumnus of Davison High School, where he laid the foundation for a lifetime of learning and achievement. His career as a tree surgeon and warehouse manager showcased his dedication and work ethic, but it was his passion for karate that truly defined him. A seventh-degree black belt and a revered member of the Chickasaw Karate Club, Jerry was not only a formidable martial artist but also a beloved mentor. His joy in teaching and his ability to inspire others were unmatched, making him a guiding light for many students.
In his personal life, Jerry was a devoted husband to Nancy J. Spence, with whom he shared many wonderful years. Together, they nurtured a loving family that includes his stepchild, Vernon F. McKee II, and his wife, Barbara Yawn. Jerry took immense pride in his grandchildren, Danielle McKee and Dylan McKee, and his great-grandchildren, AnnaLee McFerrin, Cooper McFerrin, and Ella McFerrin, who brought him endless joy and laughter.
Jerry’s life was filled with vitality and enthusiasm. A walker and gym enthusiast, he embraced an active lifestyle and encouraged others to do the same. Known for his quick wit and infectious humor, Jerry was a jokester at heart, always ready with a smile or a laugh to brighten the day. His ability to connect with people made him a cherished friend and a wonderful role model for his family.
A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held on March 17, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Serenity Funeral Home, located at 8951 Old Pascagoula Road, Theodore, 36582. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor Jerry’s memory, sharing stories and memories that capture the essence of the extraordinary man he was.
Though Jerry has left this world, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His family finds comfort in knowing that he is reunited with those who predeceased him, and his legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.
