It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerry Doyle Spence, who departed this world on March 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on December 16, 1953, in Mobile, Alabama, Jerry was the cherished son of Timothy J. Spence and Lillee B. Howell Spence. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to many.
Jerry was the devoted husband of Nancy J. Spence, with whom he shared a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. Together, they raised a family that perpetuates his legacy of kindness, humor, and strength. He was the proud father of Vernon F. McKee II, who, along with his wife Barbara Yawn, blessed Jerry with two grandchildren, Danielle McKee and Dylan McKee. His joy only grew with the arrival of his great-grandchildren, AnnaLee McFerrin, Cooper McFerrin, and Ella McFerrin, each of whom brought him immense pride and happiness.
A brother to Joyce Mainus, Melba Sharpe, and Cheryl Brinkman, Jerry was predeceased by his siblings Linda Schieder, Timothy Spence, and Marion Spence. His family was his anchor, and he cherished them deeply, always finding joy in family gatherings and the simple pleasure of being surrounded by loved ones.
Jerry’s journey in life was marked by dedication and passion. He was a graduate of Davison High School and furthered his skills as a CDL holder. His career as a tree surgeon and warehouse manager was complemented by his remarkable achievement as a seventh-degree black belt in karate. Jerry was not only a member but a cornerstone of the Chickasaw Karate Club, where he inspired many with his dedication and skill. Known as a wonderful mentor, Jerry's influence extended beyond his immediate family and into the hearts of his students and peers, where he served as a guiding light and a source of encouragement.
Outside of his professional life, Jerry was an enthusiastic walker and gym-goer, always striving to maintain an active lifestyle. He was known for his quick wit and infectious humor, often lightening the mood with a well-timed joke. A people person at heart, Jerry's warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
