Jerry Dean "Jay" Hays, a cherished husband, father, son, grandfather, and a devoted servant of the Lord, peacefully left this world to be with his Lord and Savior at 1:22 am on September 5, 2026, after courageously battling ALS. Born on December 27, 1953, in Carthage, Missouri, Jay was the beloved son of Mae (Russell) Haner and the late Jerry R. Hays. Jay's life was a testament to dedication, love, and faith. He graduated from Parkwood High School in Joplin, Missouri, in 1971, and shortly after began a long and successful career with Tri State Motor Transit, where he worked diligently for 42 years until his retirement in 2017. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity, commitment, and kindness. He also attended Theology School and earned his ministerial license. For 47 wonderful years, Jay was the devoted husband of Sharon, with whom he built a beautiful family and she stood by his side until his passing. He was the proud father of Heather Harris and her husband Morgan, and the adored grandfather of Annmarie and Jason. Jay's love extended to his step-grandchildren, Kourtney and James, whom he cherished dearly. His mother, Mae, survives him, along with his sisters Janet Nichols and husband Lance and Joy Long and husband Roger, and nieces Kristin Baker and husband Chad, Ashleigh Coffelt and husband Jacob, Dottie Bland and husband Barry and nephews Steve Lawson, Christian, Danny and Jason Volk. Jay's family, including numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins, were his pride and joy, and he relished every moment spent in their company. Jay's faith was the cornerstone of his life. A faithful member of Life Church in Carthage, Missouri for 34 years, he served diligently as Associate Pastor and contributed to various church departments. His spiritual guidance and unwavering belief in the Lord touched many lives and left an indelible mark on the community. Beyond his faith and family, Jay found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved gathering his family together, creating memories that will be cherished forever. His warmth, generosity, and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A celebration of Jay's life will be held on September 26, 2026, at 10:00 am at Life Church, located at 2956 Chapel Road, Carthage, Missouri.
