Born on July 8, 1944, in Dowagiac, Michigan, Jerry lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jerry was the beloved son of George and Carol VanKirk, who predeceased him, along with his brother, William "Bill" VanKirk, and his sister, Jennifer VanKirk-Davis. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Ronald Davis, and grandson, Charlie Topping. Despite these profound losses, Jerry carried his loved ones in his heart, ensuring their memories lived on through his stories and the values he imparted to the next generations.
In 1968, Jerry married the love of his life, Gail VanKirk. Their marriage spanned nearly six decades, a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a family and a life filled with joy and laughter. Jerry's legacy lives on through his devoted wife, Gail, his children, Jodi Topping, Melissa Powell, and Jerry Lee VanKirk, as well as his nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored.
Jerry was a man of many talents and interests. He dedicated 56 years to his career as a truck driver for J.B. Hunts, a job that took him to every corner of the United States. His colleagues and clients knew him as a reliable and dedicated worker, but it was his kindness and humor that truly set him apart. He had a unique ability to make everyone around him feel at ease, often lifting spirits with a well-timed joke or a kind word.
Outside of his professional life, Jerry cherished his time spent woodworking. With each piece he crafted, he poured his heart and soul into the details, creating beautiful, lasting treasures that will be cherished by his family for generations to come. His laughter and warmth filled every room he entered, as did his generous spirit and unwavering kindness.
A dinner to honor Jerry's life will be held at his home on March 9, 2026, at 12:00 PM. For his children and grandchildren. The family extends an invitation to all who knew Jerry to join them in a celebration of his life on March 28th at noon at the family farmhouse in Union City. It will be a time for family and friends to gather, share memories, and find comfort in the legacy of a man who touched so many lives.
Jerry's family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Though he may no longer walk among us, the light and love Jerry brought into the world will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew him.
