Jennifer Mabena
January 10, 1964 — April 12, 2026
It is with heavy hearts yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of our beloved Jennifer Mabena, affectionately known as Mabena, Mama J, and Jenny. Born on January 10, 1964, at Kensington Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, Jennifer departed this world on April 12, 2026, surrounded by the warmth of her family and the care of dedicated medical staff at Khayelitsha District Hospital.
Jennifer was the cherished youngest of seven children born to Susan and Jeffrey Mabena. Her life was both a testament to resilience and a beacon of joy to those around her. Predeceased by her parents and five siblings, she leaves behind her beloved sister, Maria Sauls, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and a legacy of 20 adoring grandchildren, who will carry forward her indomitable spirit.
Though Jennifer faced her own challenges, having been diagnosed with special needs and not completing her formal education, she nonetheless educated those around her in the more essential lessons of life—compassion, humor, and acceptance. Her unique quirks, such as her aversion to salads and her love for taxi snuff, became endearing trademarks remembered fondly by all who knew her. To this day, many recall her playful act of stripping pizza toppings off their base, a small yet memorable idiosyncrasy that painted her character in vivid color.
Jennifer's life was a tapestry of simple yet profound pleasures. She took great joy in sitting under the sun, greeting every passerby with warmth and friendliness, and dancing at family gatherings where her moves never failed to impress and entertain. Her walks with her late sister Isabel were cherished moments of companionship, and in her later years, she found solace and entertainment in watching television.
Known for her candid nature, Jennifer's introductions were both humorous and direct: "My name is Jennifer Mabena. I'm born on January 10. Yes, give me R2 for snuff (tobacco)." Her expressions, such as "los my af" or "daar begin sy weer," often provided comic relief, endearing her even more to those fortunate enough to be in her presence.
Jennifer's decline in health began in February 2026, but she was surrounded by love and care throughout her final days. Special thanks go to her nephew Matilda Mabena for her unwavering dedication to Jennifer's well-being and to Manda and Susan from Delft for their assistance during earlier times. Their kindness and devotion, along with the support of family and friends who offered prayers, visits, and messages, were a source of immense comfort.
The family extends a heartfelt invitation to a service celebrating Jennifer's life, to be held on April 25, 2026, at 7:00 AM. Together, we will honor the remarkable life of a woman who touched countless hearts and left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
In Jennifer's memory, we gather not in mourning but in celebration of a life filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable moments. Rest peacefully, Mama J, knowing your legacy of joy and resilience will forever illuminate the hearts of those who loved you.
