In Loving Memory of Jean Cullin Mertz It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Jean Cullin Mertz, who departed this world on February 21, 2026, at the age of 96. Jean passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, a testament to the life she cherished above all else—one filled with love, family, and endless compassion. Born on October 6, 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri, Jean was the beloved daughter of Victor and Rowena Cullin. As an adopted and only child, she cherished the life her parents provided her, which was enriched by joyous family gatherings and vacations in Centralia, Illinois, with her grandmother and extended family. Jean's upbringing was a tapestry of love and treasured memories, which laid the foundation for her unending devotion to her own family. Jean married the love of her life, Charles Mertz III, on August 12, 1950, in Winnetka, Illinois. Their marriage was a remarkable journey spanning 75 wonderful years. As the wife of a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and a dedicated Navy officer, Jean embraced the role of a Navy wife with grace and enthusiasm. Despite the long absences that Charles's naval career demanded, Jean's steadfastness and love never wavered. She often reminisced about the cherished memories and pride of being married to a handsome Naval officer, a life she embraced wholeheartedly. Her educational journey took her through various esteemed institutions, including Mary Institute in St. Louis, North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka, Holton-Arms Junior College in Washington, D.C., and Lake Forest College in Illinois. This eclectic education in the humanities shaped Jean into a well-rounded and insightful woman, whose wisdom and warmth touched all who knew her. For over 50 years, Jean was an active member of the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean, Virginia, where she shared her compassion and knowledge. Her dedication extended to serving on the Westminster-Ingleside Women's Board of Directors in Washington, D.C., where she made lasting contributions. Jean's passion was her family, a devotion evident in the countless hours spent at her children's sporting events, plays, graduations, and any occasion that allowed her to show her unwavering support. She was the heart of her family, a gregarious and loving presence who never met a stranger, always welcoming others into her life. Her legacy is one of unity, as her final words reminded us all to "try your best to keep the family together." Jean is survived by her devoted husband, Charles Mertz III; her children, Charles Mertz IV and his wife Marji, Victoria Mertz and her partner Mike Tobin, William and his wife Colleen, and Robert Mertz and his husband Jonathan Coleman. She leaves behind seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, each carrying forward her love and values. She was predeceased by her beloved family member, Dagmar Mertz. A service celebrating Jean's extraordinary life will be held on March 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, located at 1724 Chain Bridge Rd, McLean, VA 22101. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the charity of your choice in Jean's honor. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers, Rosemarie, Wongel, Armstrong, Ernest, and Mimi, for their loving support and care in Jean's final years. As we bid farewell to Jean Cullin Mertz, we hold onto the beautiful memories and the enduring legacy of love she leaves behind. Her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, as we strive to honor her wish to keep the family together, always.
