J.D. SANDERS SR.

It is with love in our hearts and profound gratitude that we announce the home going of J.D. Sanders Sr., who was surrounded by family when he departed this world peacefully on July 13, 2026, at the age of 91. J.D. was born on June 12, 1935, in Rohwer, Arkansas, to Effie Sanders and Cory Youngblood. He was also lovingly raised by his stepfather, Clive Sanders, whom he cherished deeply. He attended Rohwer Elementary School and Arkansas City High School. J.D. was a devoted family man whose life was a testament to love, resilience, and dedication. On March 18, 1953, he married the love of his life, Willie Mae Sanders. Their union, filled with unwavering commitment and a profound love for Christ, spanned an incredible 73 years. Together, they built a beautiful family of 7 children, shared life's joys and challenges with grace and laughter. After moving his family to Indianapolis, IN in 1957; J. D. began his career in Indianapolis with Rapp Reed Construction. He was a part of building the historical apartment buildings; Riley Towers. He later expanded his professional career with Link-Belt and Interstate Casting Foundry which is where he retired. J.D. was a man of God and worked within the ministry. He was a servant of the Lord at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. During his time there, he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, a Sunday School teacher; in addition to being the President and Director of the Antioch Male Chorus. J.D. expanded his faith by becoming a 2nd, Degree Mason. J.D. and Willie Mae renewed their faith by becoming members of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in 2025. J.D. was predeceased by his parents, Effie Sanders and Cory Youngblood, his stepfather Clive Sanders, his beloved siblings, LeRoy Sanders (Luvicey) and Maeretha Sanders, 11 Union Family in-laws, his cherished son; J.D. Sanders Jr., his dear grandson, Anthony Sanders, beloved great-great granddaughters Jayilah and Charlie and 3 sons-in-law. St. Luke M.B.C. He is survived by his beloved wife, Willie Mae Sanders, who was his constant source of strength and happiness. J.D. leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering faith through his 6 children; Maretha, Jewel, Barbara, Leroy, Doris, and JoAnn. He was a proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren, Sister-in-law Odessa (Horace), Brothers-in-law Alonzo (Tracy) and Robert Lee; each of whom held a special place in his heart. His extended family includes a host of nieces and nephews who were blessed by his wisdom and kindness. J.D. was a man of few words but great deeds. His life was marked by hard work and a steadfast commitment to his family, church and community. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and found joy in the company of his loved ones. J.D. gardening, traveling, cooking, being a self-proclaimed guitarist, being a self-taught mechanic and the family's handy man! He was a gentle giant with a warm spirit, comedic characteristics, and bright smile that will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. His spirit will forever be felt in the hearts of those who loved him, and his memory will be cherished for generations to come.
