Janie Ramelle Luker

February 6, 1940 — October 12, 2026

Janie Ramelle Proffitt Luker, known to most simply as Ramelle, passed away on October 12, 2026, at the age of 86. She was born in Leander on February 6, 1940. From swimming fearlessly in creeks alongside water moccasins, to her childhood home becoming a registered landmark, Ramelle was a proud lifelong Texan. She spent several decades of her life on her family property in Liberty Hill making memories with the people she loved. Ramelle was sharp as a tack from the very start. She graduated as valedictorian of Leander High School in 1957, then went on to earn her Bachelor of Science from The University of Texas in 1961. She built a long and meaningful career as a dietitian with the Veterans Administration, dedicating 34 years to caring for those who served. Through it all, she carried herself with a quiet class and an easy kindness that everyone who knew her came to rely on. She was a devoted Longhorn, happiest in the stands at Texas baseball and football games. She had a soft spot for country music, especially Willie Nelson. Ramelle loved exploring her home state, and she made it a mission to visit Texas county courthouses, checking off all but four of them along the way. At home, she kept her family close, sitting around the table playing cards, board games, and dominoes. Ramelle loved to cook and even had one of her favorite recipes included in the official HEB Cookbook. She also rolled up her sleeves for Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County, swinging a hammer to help build homes for her neighbors. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Lloyd Buchanan Luker, Jr.; her two sons, Mark Alan Luker and Michael Nathan Luker, three granddaughters, and two great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Allen Proffitt; her mother, Velva Sarah Jane Hibler Proffitt; and her brother, Ernest Dale Proffitt. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 29, 2026, at Celebration Church Central Austin, 1006 W. Koenig Lane, Austin, Texas, 78756, with Pastor Ken DeHart officiating. Following the service, The Luker family would like to invite friends and family to lunch for good food and fellowship as well as to hear and share stories about Ramelle at Dos Salsas, 11301 Burnet Road Building 1, Austin, Texas, 78758. Bring your best memories; she would have loved that.

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
