Janice Guernsey

Janice Guernsey, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on September 26, 2026. Born on January 24, 1942, in Gary, Indiana, Janice was the cherished daughter of Walter and Ethel Bode. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Guernsey. Janice's life was a testament to love and dedication to her family. A proud graduate of Edison High School's class of 1960, she was an active participant in numerous sports, showcasing her spirited and competitive nature early on. After high school, Janice embarked on a career as a bank teller, but she paused her career to devote herself fully to raising her children. Once they attended school, Janice returned to banking, this time making her mark as a respected loan officer. For over 40 years, Janice was an active member of Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church in Merrillville. Her commitment to her church was one of the many ways she exemplified her nurturing spirit and unwavering faith. Above all, Janice cherished her role as a “Nannie.” Her grandchildren, Hannah, Jacob, Zachary, and Noah, were the light of her life. She was their biggest cheerleader, attending every event and activity they participated in, regardless of distance. Her presence, whether in the stands or by their side, was a constant source of encouragement and love. Janice also found joy in the company of numerous lifelong friends. She relished "club" nights, traveling adventures, bowling with the girls, “doing lunch,” playing Bridge, and spending time with her best friend and brother, Jim. There wasn’t a puzzle she couldn’t complete. Her warmth and kindness fostered countless memories with those she held dear. Janice leaves behind her three children, Scott Guernsey, Sherry (David) Carter, and Stephen Guernsey, along with her treasured grandchildren. Her legacy of love, family, and friendship will endure in the hearts of all who knew her. A service to celebrate Janice's life will be held on October 1, 2026 at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point. Friends and relatives may visit the family from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM with funeral service to follow with Rev. Brian Nygaard officiating. Janice Guernsey will be remembered for her vibrant spirit and her unwavering love for her family and friends. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her legacy will live on through the lives she touched.
