It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Janice Cookston. A cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who passed away on June 28, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on April 23, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa, Janice was the beloved daughter of Roscoe and Dora Thompson. Janice was predeceased by her parents, brother Kenneth Thompson, sister Helen Cooley, son Thomas Douthett, son-in-law Joe Van Gilder, and her husbands, William Douthett, Mike Adelsperger, and Gene Cookston. She is survived by her children, Ruth Van Gilder and Charles (Cindy) Douthett. Janice was also the adoring grandmother to four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Janice's journey in education began at Dyer High School, Dyer, Indiana where she graduated with fond memories and lifelong friendships. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to Lincoln Bible College, where she nurtured her deep faith and commitment to service. Her professional life was marked by her dedication and skill, both as a receptionist and seamstress. Janice's warm and welcoming nature made her a valued employee and a trusted colleague, while her talent with a needle and thread was admired by many who knew her. A memorial service to honor and celebrate Janice's life will be held on July 29, 2026, with visitation at 10:00 AM followed by a service of life celebration at 11:00 at the Valparaiso Nazarene Church, located at 2702 E. Glendale Blvd., Valparaiso, IN. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Janice are warmly invited to attend. In her memory, donations may be made to Gideons International, a cause dear to Janice's heart, reflecting her lifelong commitment to her faith and community.
