James William Knapp

James William Knapp, a beloved uncle, friend, and community member, passed away peacefully at the age of 99, surrounded by his loving niece and nephew, Kathy and Ron Dotson. Born on September 4, 1926, in Maysville, Kentucky, James lived a life full of warmth, love, and dedication to those around him. James was the cherished son of Ervin and Mahlia (Bramel) Knapp. He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Joan, with whom he shared 64 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2013. Their bond was a testament to enduring love, having married on November 26, 1949. James was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers Eugene and Ervin, his sister Betty, and his beloved fur baby, Skippy. James leaves behind a legacy of kindness and family. He is survived by his niece Susan and nephew Crosby, both residing in Kentucky. For the past five years, his special caretakers, Kathy and Ron Dotson, ensured that James was surrounded by love and comfort. Several other nieces and nephews, along with numerous friends he made after moving to Michigan from Ohio, continue to remember him fondly. Among his closest friends was Lynn, with whom he shared the honor of being crowned King and Queen at their senior prom just a week before his passing. A proud veteran, James served his country as a Marine in World War II. His stories of service remained vivid, reflecting the pride he held in his contribution to his country. Professionally, James dedicated many years to the Columbus Dispatch, working in the printing department in Columbus, Ohio. James had a zest for life that was evident in his passions and hobbies. A die-hard Buckeye fan, he relished watching sports and attending Buckeye parties at the Dotsons. His enthusiasm for the Kentucky Derby was unmatched, and his Saturday mornings at the casino were a cherished ritual. Winters spent in Panama City with Joan were filled with joy and friendship, creating lasting connections that endured even when travels ceased. James had a special bond with Opal, a furry friend from Corewell Health Hospice, who brought him comfort in his final days. His kindness and infectious smile left a lasting impression, endearing him as a lifelong friend to many. His prowess at poker and euchre was well-known, and he was always up for a game. A graveside service to honor James's life will be held on September 4, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, located at 191 Bailey Ave, South Haven, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in James's memory to the Al Van Humane Society in South Haven, MI. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Corewell Health Hospice for their compassionate care and support during James's final days. James's life was a testament to the power of love, friendship, and the enduring bonds of family. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
