February 17, 1929 — June 8, 2026
James William Heginbotham, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and beloved friend, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on February 17, 1929, in Wichita Falls, Texas, James lived a life deeply rooted in love, service, and adventure.
James was the treasured son of C.R. Heginbotham and Maude Lela Robinson, who predeceased him, along with his beloved wife, Betty June Heginbotham, with whom he shared 62 beautiful years of marriage. His siblings, Russell, Roy, Lloyd, Mattie Lou, Doris, Charlene, and Virginia, also preceded him in passing, leaving behind a legacy of family bonds that James cherished deeply.
A proud veteran, James answered the call to serve his country with the United States Air Force at the tender age of 18, serving as a Crew Man in the 393rd Bomber Squadron. His military service, spanning from March 24, 1947, to February 27, 1950, was a period he spoke of with great pride and respect.
After an honorable discharge, James embarked on a fulfilling career with the Burlington Northern Railroad, where his passion for locomotives and steam engines was evident to all who knew him. As a dedicated fireman and later an engineer, he was admired for his unwavering commitment and expertise, serving as Chairman of the Brotherhood for many years.
James was a devoted Christian, living his faith through action and service. His life was a testament to his love for the Lord, guiding his family and friends with a steady hand and a kind heart. He was a man of many talents, from machinist to carpenter, and his ability to fix anything was legendary. His hobbies were as diverse as his skills, and he delighted in hunting, fishing, traveling, and storytelling. His love for trains remained a lifelong passion, and he was always eager to share his adventures with those around him.
James's family was the center of his universe. He is survived by his children: Marsha Bloss, James Heginbotham Jr., Judy Alderman of Fort Worth, TX, Paula Franklin of Holly Lake, TX, Randy and his wife Cindy Heginbotham of Bastrop, TX, and B.J. and her husband Rodney Phillips of Carthage, TX. His legacy continues in his 15 grandchildren, including James Heginbotham III, and two great-grandchildren, among them Gavin Ashmore. His family fondly remembers him as "Dad," "Grandpa," "PePaw," "PaPaw," and most of all, "Friend."
James's zest for life and his humorous sayings, like "Show me the Money," left a lasting impression on everyone. His time was precious, and he instilled the value of punctuality and perseverance in those he loved. He was a man who dreamed of sharing his knowledge with future generations, embodying the spirit of a true mentor.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Bobby and Pat Horton, Paula Griffin, Barbie Gonzalez, Rhonda Boone, Dr. R. Reddy, and countless friends and caregivers who supported James with compassion and dedication.
A service to celebrate James's remarkable life will be held on June 15, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Shannon Funeral Chapel, 6001 Rufe Snow Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76148. Though there will be no livestream or memorial fund, James's legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
