James Tillman Young It is with profound sadness and heartfelt gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of James Tillman Young on June 3, 2026. James slipped away peacefully in the night, finally free from his battle with kidney disease. Born on July 26, 1952, in Augusta, Georgia, James was the cherished son of Clarence and Maimie Young, both of whom preceded him in death. James was a man of profound intellect and boundless curiosity, attributes that led him to a rich and varied educational journey. After graduating from Butler High School in 1970, he pursued a degree in Psychology with a minor in Bible Philosophy at Asbury College, graduating in 1974. His thirst for knowledge took him to Johns Hopkins University for graduate work in Religious History and later to Israel, where he earned his Masters in Hebrew and Archaeological Studies. In 1976, James married Sharon Lynn Powell, and together they raised two wonderful children, Angela and Stephen. Though their paths eventually diverged, James continued to cherish beautiful relationships throughout his life. His family was the cornerstone of his world, and he took immense pride in the achievements of his children and grandchildren, James and Savannah. James had a zest for life that fueled his many interests and hobbies. He was an avid traveler, a gifted storyteller, and a talented artist who found joy and solace in painting. His keen wit and wealth of knowledge made him a captivating conversationalist, and his gentle spirit was a beacon of comfort and wisdom to those around him. James was a man who listened intently and offered a helping hand to those in need, embodying the qualities of a compassionate and complex individual who left a lasting impact on all who knew him. James is survived by his beloved children, Angela Young and Stephen Young, along with Stephen's wife, Tiffany, and their children, James and Savannah. He also leaves behind his brother, Clarence Young, and his wife Kelly, as well as his niece, Amber Young, and his nephew, Trevor Young, with his wife Leslie and their children Liana, Caeson, and Kylan. A private ceremony will be held to honor and celebrate James's life, as per his wishes. We invite those who knew him to remember James as the vibrant, insightful, and loving man he was. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, and in the countless lives he touched with his kindness and generosity. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in memory of James, to continue his spirit of giving and love.
