James Shuff, born on March 13, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026, at the age of 83. He was surrounded by love, with his devoted caregiver, cherished daughter June, and his brother Doug by his side at Senior Care Home. His remarkable life was a testament to dedication, service, and love for his family, friends, and the community.
James was the beloved son of the late Robert and June Shuff. He was predeceased by his adored wife, Lorraine Shuff, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage of 38 years, filled with love and partnership until her passing. Together, they raised three wonderful children, fostering a family rooted in warmth and kindness. James was also predeceased by his siblings Robert and Cheryl, and his son Robert Shuff.
He is survived by his loving siblings, Mary Jo and Les Murphy, and Doug Shuff, who will fondly remember his warmth and guidance. James's legacy continues through his children, June and Shane Thompson and Sara Campbell, who carry forward his values and teachings. His seven grandchildren—Peter Rick, Rebekah Wyatt, Tabitha Harvey, William Shuff, Sophia Shuff, Dante Campbell, and Drake Campbell—were his pride and joy. James was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring family bond that he cherished.
James pursued education with fervor, earning his high school diploma in 1962 and going on to obtain his Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate degrees. His commitment to learning was paralleled by his service to his country; he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965, stationed in the remote beauty of Shemia, Alaska.
A dedicated educator, James devoted 50 years of his life to teaching at Henderson State University, retiring in June 2019. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, as he shaped the minds and hearts of countless educators across Arkansas and beyond. James was an active member of Phi Delta Kappa and the Rotary Club, reflecting his commitment to professional excellence and community service.
His life was enriched by his passions for photography, woodworking, and walking, pursuits that brought him peace and joy. As an active parishioner at St. Mary's in Arkadelphia, AR for nearly 40 years, and later at St. Mary of the Springs in Hot Springs, AR, James's faith was a guiding light in his life.
James will be remembered for his patience, his unwavering belief in equality, and his gentle nature. He exemplified fairness and compassion, teaching all who knew him that respect and kindness are the cornerstones of a meaningful life.
A service to honor and celebrate James's life will be held on June 27, 2026, at 12:30 PM at St. Mary of the Springs Catholic Church, located at 100 Central Ave., Hot Springs, AR 71901. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to KAUF, an organization close to James's heart.
The Shuff family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Arkansas Hospice and the Senior Care Home, especially his dedicated caregiver, for their compassionate care and support.
