In Loving Memory
James Russel Gilbert
September 15, 1943 — March 4, 2026
It is with deep sadness yet profound love that we honor the life of James Russel Gilbert, affectionately known as Russ, who passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 82. Russ was a cherished son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, whose gentle spirit and boundless compassion left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He left this world from Knoxville, Tennessee, the city where his lifelong journey began on September 15, 1943.
Russ was the beloved son of James Neil and Polly Jean Gilbert and grew up in the embrace of a tight-knit family, alongside his brother Robert Neil Gilbert, who survives him. It was in Knoxville that Russ met his soulmate, Eleanor, during their high school years. The couple married on November 11, 1963, and together they crafted a beautiful life that spanned more than 60 years. Their love was one of those rare, enduring bonds, and Russ's heart broke when Eleanor left this world before him. It is perhaps fitting, albeit heartbreaking, that he departed to be reunited with his "Honey."
A learned man, Russ pursued his education with vigor, earning a Ph.D. and a license to practice medicine from Maryland University. His academic journey led him to serve as an anatomy professor at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM), where he inspired countless students with his expertise and passion for the sciences.
In his retirement, Russ embraced his entrepreneurial spirit by opening a computer and video rental store, sharing his love for technology and innovation with his community. His fascination with computers and electronics was not just a vocation but a beloved hobby he pursued with zest. Russ was also a skilled chess player, participating in tournaments that allowed him to engage in strategic battles of the mind, a testament to his sharp intellect and competitive spirit.
Music played a harmonious role in Russ's life, bringing joy to his days. His other interests included a deep love for animals, reflecting his kind-hearted nature, and a membership with the NRA, where he shared his appreciation for responsible sportsmanship.
Russ was a man of great humor, known for his ability to make people laugh with his wit and warmth. His kindness was as expansive as his intelligence, and he cherished his family above all else. He is survived by his three beloved children: Christine Patricia, James Roy, and Dianne Eleanor, each of whom carries forward his legacy of love and laughter. Russ was also the proud grandfather to six grandchildren, who were the apples of his eye and brought him immeasurable joy.
As we say goodbye to Russ, we remember him not just for the roles he played but for the love he shared, the wisdom he imparted, and the laughter he spread. His life was a testament to the enduring power of love and kindness, and his memory will forever be a beacon of inspiration to those who knew him.
Rest peacefully, dear Russ, reunited with your beloved Eleanor, and know that your legacy of love will forever be cherished by the family and friends you leave behind.
