In Loving Memory

James Ray Dority
July 29, 1958 — May 26, 2026
In the gentle embrace of the early morning sun on May 26, 2026, our beloved James Ray Dority, a man of valor and warmth, peacefully embarked on his final journey from this world. Born on July 29, 1958, in Osceola, Arkansas, James lived a life filled with laughter, love, and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on all fortunate enough to have known him.
James was the cherished son of James Dority and Annie Mae Dority, both of whom predeceased him. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Charles B. McBride, Robert Lee Smith, Curtis Harvey, and Brain Jones, as well as his sisters, Ethel Mae Downer and Shirley Huberins. Despite their physical absence, their spirits were a guiding force throughout James's life.
He is survived by his legacy of love, including his three devoted daughters, Demtrius Dority of Jonesboro, AR, Tamika Deshay (Jacob) of Fort Worth, TX, and Lotoya Dority of San Antonio, TX, as well as his son, James Dority III, of San Antonio, TX. James's vibrant spirit lives on in his nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, always remembered for his quick wit and warm smile that could light up any room.
James's family extends to his dear siblings, Jerlene Hamilton (David) and Earlene Smith (Albert) of Jonesboro, and his brother Hezekiah Smith (Charlene) of Saint Louis, MO. He shared a special bond with his siblings Joyce Talley (Fred) of Milwaukee, WI, Hughery Cunningham, Cherece Reynolds, and Oscar Reynolds of Luxora, AR. His extensive family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends will forever hold him in their hearts.
James's journey of service began with his graduation from Luxora High School in 1977, followed by a distinguished 20-year career in the U.S. Army, where he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring in 1998. His dedication to his country was paralleled by his commitment to his faith, having accepted Christ at an early age at Gospel Temple Baptist Church in Luxora, AR.
James was known for his kindness and generosity, always ready with a joke to lighten the mood and possessed a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. His life was a testament to the power of friendship, laughter, and love.
A celebration of James's life will be held on June 26, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the Beam Massey Burge Funeral Home, located at 2951 S Belt Line Rd, Grand Prairie, TX 75052. As we gather to honor his memory, we are reminded of the special message he leaves behind:
The Final Flight
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free,
I'm following the path God laid for me
I took his hand when I heard his call,
I turned my back and left it all,
I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work, to play,
Task left undone must stay that way,
I've found that peace at the end of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah, yes, these things, too, I will miss.
Be not burdened with the time of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow,
My life's been full, I savored much,
good friends, good times, a loved one's touch,
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief;
lift up your heart and share with me.
God wanted me now; He set me free.
The Dority family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they have received during this difficult time. They are especially thankful for the prayers that continue to uplift them as they navigate this journey of loss.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in James's memory to a charity of your choice, as a testament to his spirit of generosity and care for others.
James Ray Dority, a man of strength, humor, and compassion, will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His life was a testament to the beauty of a well-lived journey, and his memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those he touched.
