It is with heavy hearts and a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of our beloved James R. Billington, who departed this life on August 18, 2026, at the age of 86. Jim passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. His journey began on September 6, 1939, in the quaint town of Rome, New York, where he was born to the late James H. Billington and Margaret J. Hopper Billington. Jim's life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and the love he had for his family and community. For 42 years, he was a proud and esteemed employee of Carpenter's Hardware/Plumley Construction. His hands shaped the landscape of Camden and the surrounding areas, crafting hundreds of houses and commercial buildings. Each structure bore his signature craftsmanship and attention to detail, standing as enduring testaments to his skill and passion for building. Beyond his professional life, Jim was a man of many stories and talents. He had a gift for storytelling, regaling friends and family with tales from his childhood, his school days, his time in the Navy, and his adventures at work. His stories were woven with humor and warmth, leaving listeners with a smile and a sense of camaraderie. A gifted athlete in his youth, Jim was a scholastic sportsman who carried his love for athletics throughout his life. He was an unwavering Yankees' fan, delighting in watching games on television and cheering passionately for his granddaughter Abigail at her sporting events. Jim's talents extended beyond storytelling and sports; he was a master carpenter whose ability to build and repair was unparalleled. He generously shared his expertise with family and friends, offering sage advice and innovative tricks of the trade. In the Camden community, Jim was a revered figure, known for his willingness to lend a helping hand whenever needed. His presence was a comforting constant, and his contributions to the community will be remembered and cherished. Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Kay Anderson Billington, who stood by his side through every chapter of life. He leaves behind a loving family, including his daughters Jill Leamer (Tom) of Morrisville and Janet Billington of Syracuse, and his cherished granddaughter Abigail Leamer of Morrisville. Jim's sister, Susan Billington of Camden, New York, also survives him, along with numerous friends and neighbors who felt the warmth of his friendship. In honor of Jim's memory, the family kindly suggests that donations be made to the Camden Ambulance or the Nascentia Health Charitable Foundation. These organizations reflect the spirit of care and community that Jim embodied throughout his life. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. Jim's life was a beacon of love, kindness, and dedication, and he will forever remain in our hearts as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
