With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the peaceful passing of James Olly Holland on March 5, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on September 16, 1931, in Marston, New Madrid, Missouri, James, affectionately known as Jim, lived a life marked by dedication, love, and laughter.
Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife, Fran, his father, Robert Russell, his mother, Hazel, his brother, Harold, and his sister, Louise. He leaves behind a legacy through his cherished children: Jimmy (Anne), Janet (Sam) Appleton, Jay (Michele), and Jerry (Carol). His memory will also be carried on by his eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his later years.
A proud and devoted patriot, Jim dedicated 20 years of his life to serving in the United States Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. His military service was a cornerstone of his identity, and he carried the values of honor and integrity into every endeavor thereafter. Following his distinguished military career, Jim transitioned to the real estate profession, where he spent 30 successful years, known for his honesty and keen eye for opportunity.
Jim was not just a professional; he was a vibrant presence in his community. He was an active member of the Pacesetter Lions Club in Huntsville, Alabama, where he found camaraderie and purpose, helping to support numerous charitable efforts. His passion for service extended beyond his professional and organizational commitments. Jim was a man who loved to travel, collecting not just coins, but stories and friendships from every corner of the globe. An avid fan of Alabama football, he could often be found cheering on his favorite team, surrounded by friends and family, his infectious laughter filling the room.
Those who knew Jim will remember his great sense of humor and his ability to tell the most interesting stories, each one more captivating than the last. He was well-liked by all who had the privilege of knowing him, a testament to his character and the warmth he radiated.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Lions Club of Alabama, a nod to Jim's lifelong commitment to service and generosity.
A visitation will be held on April 25th from 1:00 - 3:00 PM at Laughlin Funeral Home. This will be followed by a full military funeral at Maple Hill Cemetery, a fitting tribute to a man who served his country with honor and pride.
Jim's journey on earth has ended, but his spirit will live on through the countless lives he touched. As we bid farewell, we celebrate the remarkable life of James Olly Holland, a man who loved deeply, laughed heartily, and lived fully. Rest in peace, dear Jim. You will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
