James Ogburn (Mutt) Brady Sr.

February 14, 1936 — April 16, 2026

In loving memory, we honor the life of James Ogburn (Mutt) Brady Sr., who peacefully passed away at home on April 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his devoted family. Born on Valentine’s Day, 1936, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Mutt was a beacon of warmth and love throughout his 90 remarkable years. Mutt was the youngest son of the late Moses Lee Brady and Hazel Viola Edwards. He shared a deep, enduring love with his beloved wife, Barbara Virginia Burton, whom he married on November 25, 1953. Their union of 69 years was a testament to a life filled with devotion, laughter, and shared dreams. Together, they nurtured a loving family, raising four children: Sandra Brady Phillips (Randy), Vickie Brady Page (Ricky), Donna Brady Mobley, and Jim Brady (Elizabeth), who were the pride and joy of his life. An entrepreneur at heart, Mutt was a self-employed mail contractor with the United States Postal Service, where he built a successful business, J.O. Brady Inc., that employed about 40 individuals whom he treated as family. His dedication and passion for his work were unparalleled, and he found immense joy in the daily interactions and relationships he cultivated over the years. Mutt was a devoted member of Newlyn Street Methodist Church, where his faith and community spirit were a guiding light. Known for his quick wit, warm smile, and “Muttisms”, he had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. His kindness and generosity left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to know him. Beyond his professional life, Mutt and Barbara were known for their open houses and gatherings, “Do Drop In’s”where all were welcome, and everyone became part of their extended family. Mutt loved people deeply, giving so much to others without expecting anything in return. His presence was a source of comfort and joy, and his legacy of love and generosity will continue to inspire those who knew him. In his final years, not a day went by without him acknowledging how God had blessed him! Mutt/Papaw is also survived by his beloved grandchildren who were his pride and joy: Craig Phillips (Michelle), Stephanie Phillips, Matthew Page, Justin Mobley (Denver, CO) and Emily Mobley (Hillsborough, NC); and his great-granddaughter, Bree Phillips. He was predeceased by his dear wife, Barbara, who awaits him with open arms. He was the youngest of six siblings who predeceased him. He has one surviving sister-in-law, Betty Burton Bluster (Duluth, Ga.) and many nieces and nephews that he dearly loved. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers over the years and to Gentiva Hospice and Amada who provided exceptional care and comfort in Dad's final days. A celebration of Mutt's life will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 1:00 to 4:00 at the family home located at 2203 Cypress St., Greensboro, NC 27405. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend who touched so many lives with his love and kindness. Mutt was known by many as the “Manhole King” of McAdoo Heights. In honoring his memory, let us carry forward his legacy of quick wit, warmth, generosity, and the unconditional love he so freely gave. Memorials may be made to Newlyn Street United Methodist Church (Greensboro). Mutt believed family is the greatest blessing of all. Dad/Papaw, you will be forever missed.
