James Michael Gambrill

James Michael Gambrill, fondly known as "Jim" to his family and friends, peacefully departed this world on July 5, 2026, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, at the age of 85. Born on April 13, 1941, in the heart of Lawrence, Kansas, Jim was a beacon of kindness and warmth whose presence will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Jim was the beloved son of the late Ernest Grover Gambrill and Monica Margaret Coughlin (Gambrill) Morrison. and his Brothers, Jack and Billy Gambrill, who preceded him in death.
Growing up, Jim learned the values of family, hard work, and integrity—principles that would guide him throughout his life.
A man of many talents and business ventures, Jim was best known for his role as the owner of B & J Thriftway Grocery Store in Tonganoxie. Through his business, he not only provided employment opportunities but also became a pillar of the community, known for his fair dealings and community spirit. His dedication to his work was matched only by his passion for wood working, cars, antiques and loved to go to auctions, hobbies that brought him immense joy and countless friendships.
Jim had a unique gift for making others feel welcome and valued. His quick wit and warm smile could light up a room, and his generosity was legendary. Whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or a heartfelt laugh, Jim touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those around him.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved partner, Terri A. Chop.
Jim is also survived by his adoring children: Melissa Katz, Eric Gambrill, and Mark Gambrill with his wife Tanya. His legacy lives on in his grandchildren, Devon Katz, Bryce Katz, Ty Gambrill, and Ian Gambrill, who will continue to carry forward his spirit of kindness and community.
Jim is also survived by his brother, Jerry Gambrill, and his wife Donna.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for the compassionate care provided to Jim in his final days. Jim took his first breath there and his last.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor his life and legacy.
A Celebration of life will be held at a later date.
