James McKinley Turner

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of James McKinley Turner, affectionately known to many as "Mack," who left this world on July 17, 2026, just shy of his 76th birthday. Born on July 25, 1950, in the serene town of Goochland, Virginia, Mack was the cherished son of the late Floyd "Sunny" Mitchell and Izetta Taylor. He was lovingly raised by his mother and stepfather, James Taylor, and is now reunited with them in eternal peace, along with his brother, Charles "Butch" Turner. Mack was a man of great character and resilience, a trait he honed from his formative years attending Goochland County Public Schools. His sense of duty and commitment to his country led him to serve proudly in the United States Marine Corps, where he bravely served in Vietnam—a testament to his unwavering bravery and dedication. After his military service, Mack found fulfillment in his work with Capital Masonry, where he dedicated many years to the construction industry before retiring. Yet, it was in his personal life where Mack's true passions flourished. A man of the outdoors, he found joy and solace in hunting, fishing, and the simple pleasure of watching old westerns. He was also a spirited enthusiast of local car shows and races, where he forged many friendships. Mack’s life was enriched by the love and companionship of Ms. Shirley Cox, his devoted companion. He was the proud father of Gregory (Lawanda), Charmaine (Lloyd), and Brandon. He shared a special bond with Shirley (Rodney), Eugene, and Andre (Cheryl), his bonus children, whom he cherished deeply. Mack’s legacy lives on through his seven siblings, a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and his dear friend, James Minor, all of whom he loved deeply. A man of faith, Mack joined St. Mark Baptist Church at an early age, where he remained a faithful member until his health declined. His spiritual journey was a testament to his enduring faith and the warmth he shared with those around him. A service to honor Mack’s life will be held at Mealy's Funeral Home in Goochland, VA, on July 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Mack's memory. The family of James "Mack" Turner extends their deepest gratitude to everyone for their prayers, visits, and acts of kindness during this difficult time. Special thanks are given to the dedicated medical staff at Henrico Doctor's Hospital, Canterbury Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, and McGuire Hospital, whose support and care were invaluable. Mack will be remembered as a loving companion, a devoted father, a proud veteran, and a dear friend. His warmth, kindness, and laughter will forever echo in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Mack, knowing you are deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
