James McKinley Palmer, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2026, at the age of 64 in Dubuque, Iowa. Born on June 20, 1962, in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, James was the cherished son of the late Lela Mae Parnell and Jesse McKinley Palmer. His life was a testament to the values of hard work, love, and dedication. James grew up in a lively household, surrounded by his siblings and the bustling energy of Chicago. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Darla L. Shane-Palmer, as well as his parents, sister Ida Mae Parnell, and brother Thomas Parnell. Despite these profound losses, James maintained a spirit that was both resilient and inspiring. He attended Percy L. Julian High School; James pursued a career that fueled his passion for the open road. He became an over-the-road truck driver, working for various companies over the years. His love for trucks was evident from a young age, and he turned that childhood fascination into a lifelong vocation. James's legacy is carried on by his devoted children: Jeanette Palmer, James Palmer Jr. (Jada), and Emani Palmer. He was also a loving stepfather to Joshua Shane, Krysta Shane and Mekaila Shane and a cherished grandfather to their children. His siblings, Stanley Parnell (Beatrice), Rodessca Palmer (Carter), and Robert Palmer (Leshia), held a special place in his heart. His aunts Rosetta Jordan, Betty Jean Harris (Robert), Ceola Palmer. His uncles Kenneth Parnell (Pat) and James Parnell. As well as his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Along with his close friend who was also his youngest daughters mother Kathy Kennedy, who stood by him through life's many journeys. James's life was filled with moments of joy, laughter, and love. He was known for his warm smile, generous spirit, and the deep connections he forged with those around him. His passion for trucks was only matched by his love for his family; he was a pillar of strength and support, always ready with a listening ear or a helping hand. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we hold close the memories of a life well-lived. James McKinley Palmer will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
