James Mayfield
September 13, 1951 — June 30, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Mayfield, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who peacefully departed this life on June 30, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on September 13, 1951, in the warm embrace of Conyers, Georgia, James was the beloved son of the late Ada B Mayfield and Arthur Mayfield. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur, Clyde, and David Mayfield, who undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms.
James’s life was a testament to love, family, and community. On Valentine’s Day in 1969, he married the love of his life, Tabitha Mayfield, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey that spanned over five decades. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter, raising their daughters, Suzette and Courtney Mayfield, who carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength.
James was a proud graduate of Aberdeen High School, where he first cultivated the traits of determination and perseverance that would guide him throughout his life. His career at Sable Steel was not just a testament to his hard work but also to his unwavering dedication and commitment to providing for his family. James was a man of integrity, known for his firm handshake and his ability to find joy in the simplest of moments.
A pillar of his community, James was an active and devoted member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. His faith was his guiding light, and he found great joy in the fellowship and service he shared with his church family. James’s generosity of spirit was evident in every interaction, and he was often seen with a warm smile and a kind word for everyone he met.
Beyond his professional and spiritual life, James had a zest for life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman, finding peace and tranquility on the water. He delighted in cooking, often hosting barbecues that brought family and friends together, where his laughter and stories filled the air. A fan of basketball and an enthusiast of the classic TV series The Twilight Zone, James also had a keen mind for card games, especially spades, where his playful competitiveness shone through.
James is survived by his devoted wife, Tabitha, his loving daughters, Suzette and Courtney, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were his pride and joy. His legacy lives on in each of them, as well as in the many lives he touched with his kindness, humor, and unwavering support.
James Mayfield was a man who embodied strength and compassion. He was protective of those he loved and was always ready with a smile or a joke to lift spirits. His life was a tapestry of love, woven with threads of laughter, dedication, and an unyielding sense of duty to his family and community.
As we gather to celebrate James’s remarkable life, we remember him as he was: a strong, caring, and funny man who left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
A celebration of James’s life will be held at Zion Hill Baptist Church, where friends and family will come together to honor his memory and the incredible journey he shared with us all. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Zion Hill Baptist Church in James’s memory, to continue his legacy of faith and community service.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may we find comfort in the love he gave us all.
