August 18, 1937 — June 7, 2026

August 18, 1937 - June 7, 2026 With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of James Marvin Brooks, who left us gently in his sleep on June 7, 2026, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, on August 18, 1937, James's journey was one of dedication, love, and community service—a story woven with the threads of family, faith, and friendship. James was the cherished son of Lenard James Brooks Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Brooks, and he now joins them, along with his oldest sister, two brothers, and beloved daughter, in eternal peace. His life was a testament to resilience and joy, marked by the indelible bonds he forged with those around him. His beloved wife, Deloris Betty Knight, survives James, offering grace and love that defined their union since their marriage in 2005. James's legacy is carried forward by his eldest son, Robert Brooks, and youngest daughter, Bertha Evelyn Hayes, supported by the love of his grandchildren: Sharif, Walter and Benica Brooks, Evelyn Marbury (Jonas), James Brooks III, and Elaine Hatchett (Reginald), Alexander and Cedrick Brooks. Moreover, his warmth and wisdom continue to inspire a host of 17 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who will undoubtedly carry his spirit into the future. James's journey with love began with his first wife, Hazel Jennings, whom he married in 1957. Together, they raised three children, painting a picture of familial devotion until Hazel's passing in 2001. James found love once more with Deloris, reaffirming his belief in second chances and the enduring power of love. A proud graduate of Shaw High School in Chicago around 1962, James met Hazel and his lifelong friend, Derrick Hayes, there. His strong sense of duty and adventure led him to serve in the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant before his honorable discharge in 1978. Post-military life saw James's talents flourish as a carpenter, where his craftsmanship left a lasting mark on the community he so dearly cherished. For over 45 years, James was an active and respected member of the Greater East Bethel Baptist Church, where he served diligently on the Deacon Board. His faith was a beacon to many, and his testimony of transformation through God's love inspired all who knew him. James's passion for his community and the church was matched only by his love for his family, whom he adored and supported with unwavering strength. James's life was enriched by simple pleasures, from his love of dominoes—where he was a reigning champion at family reunions—to the joy he found in building and creating with his hands. Known for his humor and harmless pranks, James's kindness left an unforgettable mark on everyone he met. A celebration of James's life will take place on June 13, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Greater East Bethel Baptist Church, located at 8374 Monument Drive, Chicago, Illinois, 60706. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all who have shown love and expressed condolences during this time of remembrance. James Marvin Brooks leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and faith. His life was a testament to the power of community, the strength of family, and the joy of living each day with purpose. Though he has departed from this earthly realm, his spirit remains, a guiding light and source of inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing him.
