James (Jim) Willette

December 11, 1941 — May 29, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Willette, who left us on May 29, 2026, at the age of 84. Jim passed away peacefully in his beloved home in Chisago City, MN, with his cherished family by his side, wearing his signature cowboy hat—a fitting tribute to his spirited and independent nature. Born on December 11, 1941, in Duluth, MN, Jim was the son of Ted and Theresa Willette. He possessed an adventurous spirit from an early age, which often landed him in colorful situations, such as the legendary incident involving limburger cheese and the Catholic school oil heaters, prompting an early exit from formal education after the sixth grade. Despite this, Jim's intelligence and tenacity were evident throughout his life. Jim proudly served in the U.S. Navy for four years, where he forged lasting memories and friendships. He often recounted tales from his time aboard ships, including working under the real-life inspiration for the movie "Yours, Mine and Ours." Remarkably, despite his love for the sea, Jim never learned to swim. It was during his naval service in San Francisco that he met Trudy, his first wife, with whom he shared a love of dancing and life for many years. Jim and Trudy married on June 5, 1965, and together they raised five children, instilling in them a strong work ethic and an appreciation for family. After Trudy's passing, Jim found love again with Sandra, whom he married on May 22, 1999. With Sandy, he welcomed her children Laurie and Tammy, and son-in-law Paul into his heart and family. A farmer at heart, Jim's life was a testament to hard work and resilience. After leaving farming, he embraced a new passion for painting, eventually running his own business before joining Croix Management, where he worked with dedication until his retirement. Yet, even in retirement, Jim was never one to sit still. His hands were always busy, often with duct tape in hand, crafting solutions to life's little challenges, from household repairs to his own pacemaker. Jim's love for music, particularly old-time country, was a constant throughout his life. He and Trudy were known for tearing up the dance floor, and his love for polka dancing was a legacy he shared with his children. He also enjoyed participating in the Minnesota State Band with Sandy, even traveling to England for performances. A man of generosity and humor, Jim was quick with a smile and a joke, often delighting those around him with his infectious laughter and warmth. He was fiercely loyal, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. His love for his family and community was evident in every interaction. Jim's generosity extended beyond his lifetime, as he chose to donate his body to the University of Minnesota for research, ensuring his legacy of giving continued. Jim is predeceased by his parents, Ted and Theresa, his brothers and sisters, his first wife Trudy, his second wife Sandra, stepdaughter Tammy Roerick, and his beloved canine companion, Romeo. He is survived by his children Tammy (Danny), Debbie (Paul), Cheryl (Scott), Jim Willette Jr., and Laurie (Paul); his grandchildren Gilbert, Jonny, Hannah, Isabel, Jessica, Cody, Rylee, Ryan, Austin, Avery, Allie, Haley, Cassie, and Michael; and his great-grandchildren Avalynn and Pacey. Each of them carries a piece of Jim's vibrant spirit forward. A Memorial Service will be held in Jim's honor on June 7, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the serene Wooded Retreat, located at 24216 Hinckley Rd, Pine City, MN. Family and friends are invited to share stories, enjoy a shot of brandy, or simply cherish time with loved ones in remembrance of a man who touched so many lives. Jim Willette was truly one of a kind, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. As we celebrate his life, his family extends an invitation to all to honor his memory by sharing a story, toasting with a shot of brandy, or simply basking in the love of those around you—just as Jim would have wanted. Jim, you were a beacon of love and laughter. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of many, and you will be forever missed.
