James (Jim) B. Cook, a cherished father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on September 26, 1948, in Grand Rapids, MI, Jim lived a life rich in service, compassion, and love. He was the beloved son of Bennie and Jean Cook, who have predeceased him, along with his brother-in-law, John Ambler. Jim's formative years in Grand Rapids nurtured a curiosity and passion for understanding the human mind, leading him to graduate with honors from East Grand Rapids High School in 1966. His thirst for knowledge drove him to pursue a Master's degree in psychology, with a specialization in neuropsychology, from Western Michigan University. Throughout his career, Jim dedicated himself to the betterment of others while working for the State of Michigan prison system. His commitment extended beyond his professional duties, as he actively participated in community service programs such as the Drug Help Flying Squad, the Switchboard Crisis Line, and the Grand Rapids Youth Ministry. His work touched countless lives, and his legacy of kindness and empathy will endure in the hearts of many. Jim had a profound love for music and poetry, often sharing his favorite verses and melodies with those around him. His ability to find beauty and meaning in the world inspired others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of joy and reflection. He is survived by his loving children, Amber; his devoted sister, Peggy Ambler; and his caring brothers, Mike (Linda) Cook, Tom (Judy) Cook, and Ben (Heather) Cook. He also leaves behind two cherished grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his later years. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at New Haven Assisted Living and Interim Hospice, who provided exceptional care and comfort to Jim in his final days. As we celebrate Jim's life, we remember him as a beacon of love and wisdom. His gentle spirit and unwavering dedication to helping others serve as a guiding light for those who knew him. Jim's memory will forever be etched in the hearts of his family and friends, reminding us of the power of kindness and the enduring impact of a life well-lived. A memorial service will be held to honor Jim's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the community service programs that were so dear to Jim's heart, ensuring that his spirit of giving continues to inspire and support those in need. Rest in peace, dear Jim. Your soul may have moved on, but your love and light remain with us always.
