James Hardy

October 10, 1945 — October 22, 2026

James "Jim" Hardy, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on October 22, 2026, after a brief battle with the flu and aspiration pneumonia. Born on October 10, 1945, in Iron County, Missouri, Jim was the cherished son of Reca (McQuary) Hardy and Hurschel Hardy. He is predeceased by his loving parents and his sisters, Mary Frances (Hardy) Ritter and Dorothy (Hardy) Allmon. Jim leaves behind his beloved wife, Nancy, with whom he shared a rich and joyous marriage just shy of 60 years. Together they raised a son, Patrick, alongside his wife Kelley, and celebrated the lives of three grandchildren: Victoria (Hardy) Roberts, Aaron Hardy, and Katharin Hardy-Goodwin, along with their spouses Cody, Amber, and Wyatt. Jim was overjoyed to be the great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren, eagerly anticipating another addition to the family. His sisters, Ruth (Hardy) Schmelzel and Bonnie (Hardy) Blanckaert, along with numerous nieces and nephews, also survive him. Jim's educational journey began in Ironton, Missouri, where he graduated high school in 1963. He pursued his passion for music, earning a bachelor's degree in music education from Southeast Missouri College in 1967, and a master's in music composition and theory from the University of Central Missouri in 1972. His thirst for knowledge led him to doctoral work at Memphis State University, where he served as a graduate assistant with the band, as well as instructor of applied trombone. A veteran, Jim served with the 399th Army Band from 1969 to 1971 at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. His love for music translated into a successful career as a high school band director, where his jazz band earned a reputation for their competitive success. Later, he ventured into the insurance world, working with AXA-Equitable developing and implementing training materials and processes, and earning multiple professional designations. Jim's life was adorned with memberships and affiliations that reflected his varied interests. He was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Civitan during his time in Memphis. Not to be overlooked, was his proud membership in the official “Worthless No Accounts Club” with his brothers in law. An active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Memphis, TN and later St. Andrew United Methodist Church here in Georgia, he was involved in multiple church activities and community service. Jim was also an avid cyclist, enjoying adventurous trips across the country and abroad with his wife, Nancy. Despite the challenges of Parkinson's disease, Jim embraced life with vigor, participating in the Rock Steady Boxing Program and contributing to Parkinson's research. His passion for teaching and learning was evident in the joy he took in educating others, especially his grandchildren. He taught them to read, ride bicycles, and make Bug Soup. Jim's sense of humor was legendary, known for his playful puns and delightful wit. A celebration of Jim's life will be held on January 23, 2027, at 2:00 PM at St. Andrew United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, honoring Jim's commitment to furthering research and awareness. Alternately, donations may be made to the music department of St. Andrew United Methodist Church. Jim’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Rock Steady Boxing program, the church family at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, his Warren County band students, and Amedysis in-home Hospice for their compassionate care and support. Jim's legacy of love, laughter, and music will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
